I don't get it. Why do you need to know what gear you're in ?
Change up if the revs get too high (or you want to), change down once, possibly twice, if you're cornering, slowing down or overtaking and first gear if you come to a stop .... doesn't that cover it ?
Opinions are like A**holes, Everyone has one. Some people seem to have more than one though which is a bit odd.
