If he's out of the country why not SORN it till he gets back ? Saves on tax for months you're not here... Just an idea.
Opinions are like A**holes, Everyone has one. Some people seem to have more than one though which is a bit odd.
It's worth noting I don't think you can tax online unless it has a valid MOT and insurance. Why doesn't he give you the details and see if you can do it on his behalf if you're willing

taxed my van last week no problems and went on just now and seems to be working ok
Seems the Bike has a current MOT and Insurance .. needs new Road Tax so that his Dad can use from time to time.
Apparently .. he gets so far into the on-line proceedure and it stops .. unable to go any further .. just seems strange.
His first thinking was that the DVLA might be just shut over Easter?
PB. (What do I know .. I just work at the Car Wash :\ )

I recommend you try it on his behalf using his reference number and card number or that he takes a screen shot of the issue or that he phones the dvla up for support :lol

Just a thought and i could be WAY off the mark but some sites dont allow you to do things from another countrys IP address. i know when gamming this was offten an issue that had to be got around.
maybe it is getting to a check point of the ip address (if its stopping at the same point each time for him) and not allowing further accses. i would have thought it would bring up a screen to say that but who knows? /shrug
the easy get around would be for the dad or a mate in this country to try it with the right ref numbers etc as said above.
:thumbup That sounds like it might well be the case Ghosty .. yes.
I'll let him have that bit of info and he can see how he goes. Thank you all for your help Guys.

The dvla system checks the insurance against the mid and if details don't match it will stop process..... You can check the motor insurance database online mid which may help explain if it doesn't come up....
and while youre on the dvla site, shop a few untaxed cars. i found 4 today! :evil
:\ Sorry I don't do this IT Talk ... What is a mid ?
Where do they live?
Cheers PB
Sorry.......
Mid is the motor insurance database..... It is a public access database all insurance companies have to subscribe to.
I believe the public site is askmid.com or something very similar. It allows you to put your registration in and it then tells you if that vehicle is insured or not.
It is used by dvla and police and various others to check insurance is in force on a vehicle. As with all databases though it is only as good as the information put into it..... For example if someone puts an o (oscar) in instead of a 0 (zero) at an insurance policy input, it will come up with the vehicle not being insured.....
Hope that helps....
Just my two pence worth
Last time I used the DVLA to tax online , and used a debit card , went to the bank the next day and was told I had no funds in my account
Long story short, when checking statements with the bank , 2 seconds after the DVLA payment was completed there was a transaction for £1, followed by, over the next 2 hours, £4000 of online shopping.Fraud investigator at the bank said the £1 transaction is a test made by the scammers to check the details theyve just hacked will work.
So it might just be me but any hiccups with the DVLA web and id be out of there quick as fuck and have always taxed at the PO since
DVLA did not respond at all to questions I asked
So if your mate wants to carry on with it use a credit not debit card
Well known scam that mate there are a LOT of fake government sites and many that charge you for things that are free i.e. European Health Card which is free to UK citizens!
There are a few tricks you can use to sort out the fake ones: -
1. Dont just use the first link that your search engine gives you!
2. Go to the MAIN government website for each department i.e. car/bike tax go to DVLA and then use the links.
3. Look at the address bar and check what's following http:// as these will be very different from the name of the site if its a fake.
4. If your paying on line look in the address bar and make sure the address is preceded by https:// the S is VERY important no S DONT enter your details it's not secure and fake!
There are probably many more but so far these have worked for me.
