#1
get very old emulsified oil out of an engine (without dismantling the motor!!)
it's been sat there for @2 years waiting for me to get a round tuit.
drained the oil and basic gunk out, but there is a perma layer of gunk on the bottom of the crankcases.
i've put a litre of petrol in there and sloshed it about a bit. any other ideas?

Engine flush? you might need oil in for that?

diesel is good, and it wont make any difference if there is any left once you get it going.

Fill with a cheap brand oil run for a couple of miles then drain, add better quality oil, should help, and as others have said oil flush might help also
If you worried about falling off your bike, you'd never get on.

From what your saying this remaining oil is the sludge layer and very heavily emulsified, DONT whatever you do run the engine with diesel/petrol or flushing oil.  Flushing oil is only meant to help the removal of old non-emulsified oil nothing more. By running the engine containing the above you will end up depositing the thinned and/or small lumps all around the engine coating everything with it and potentially blocking oil galleries, and at some point in the future you will seize something.

Remove the sump and clean it while your there clean the strainer and the oil pump if you don't you will just deposit any remaining sludge from the pump elsewhere.  Remove the cam covers and have a look at the oil that is remaining in the head where the oil collects check that it's not also heavily emulsified if it is you need to strip the engine remove ALL the old emulsified oil pat special attention to the oil scraper/control rings. Diesel is excellent for removing the emulsified oil and far safer than petrol not only form the fire point of view it will also not damage oil seals.
