if like me you replace the whole filter (im not sure if its possible to just replace the inside)
you will need:
a screw driver (pointier the better) and a hammer

step 1: using the hammer hit the screw driver into the oil filter
step 2: use the screwdriver to turn the oil filter and take it off the bike
step 3: screw on new filter by hand should be able to get it tight enough using your hands mines never lost oil and i have always hand tightend the oil filter

if you are going this route hit the rim of the filter where ir screws onto the oil cooler to turn it,i did it this way as my oil filter tool would not turn the filter and on the thou there is not a lot of space,a couple of taps and the filter turned with minimal damage to the old filter and no splillage and i did not have to hit it hard either

this is all well and good, until you get to a filter thats been put on by a ham-fisted mechanic, and done up tighter than a gnats whatsit. then the screwdriver just rips the filter apart, and you've made yourself a world of pain. Use the tool on the end, or a chain whip. Its why the proper tools were invented.

absolutely, just wish the poxy hamfisted mechanics knew that !!

i allways use the metal cap type tool that fits over the filter!! perfect fit and no chance of slipping off! like rich says? u mank it up and you then end up mankin ure hands uptryin to remove whats left! being where  it is too! right be hind the pipes!! you can quite easily get the cap type on with a bit of jiggling? and your ratchet bar will squeeze between the pipes ! you then get to spin it off with no effort!! JOB DUN!!

As someone who has focced up a filter with a screwdriver - don't -once ripped if its tight - other tools won't work anymore as a torn one just distorts when using a chain or a strap.

Thanks for the replies.

Ordered one off Wemoto. I do my own oil and filter changes and hand tighten filter. Sometimes its still a bugger to get off because access isn't easy with the pipes. last change, I spent 15 minutes swearing and vowing I'd get a oil wrench filter before the next change. So I have. Smile

I used to do the old screwdriver trick but got fed up with hot oil spewing everywhere..

Had the grippy filter pliers but even they didn't work best in a tight place.

Now use the wrench that fits over the cap, just remember to fit it first behind the exhausts before warming the oil up!
