Ivans pod filter set up!
#1
Has anyone done the Ivans pod filter set up on their bike?

I've been fortunate enough to snatch his last 2 sets but as I understand it he won't be making anymore ?

Also with holeshot having closed their shop temporarily maybe that's a hole in the market!?

These are soon to find their way onto my nike along with the full monty+ appropriate main jets ti suit...

Unless it's a track bike, don't bother is my advice, you'll be pissin about with jetting forever, it'll never run right with pod filters, technology's moved on since those dark days, plus you'll be knackered if ever caught out in the rain ... I once owned a Yoshimura race tuned CB900F with K&N race pod filters back in the 80's, show it any kind or rain & you may as well just park it up.
There's a reason Yamaha spends millions on R&D, OEM airbox can be modified & flow improved to a degree, this is a mod proven on a Dyno, never known any good to come from pod filters.

Hey Gaz,

You're right about pods but what Richard didn't explain was that the adapters in the photo were designed by Ivan to overcome the issues you mentioned.  Their length is tuned to correct the inlet resonance issues that mess with the jetting.

That said, they offer no performance benefits over the modified OE airbox/filter combination that work so well with Ivan's MB jet kit (aka The Full Monty).  Ivan developed and marketed the pods option for the US market, where there was a demand based on looks alone.  Other tuners offered pods to go with their jet kits but none took the trouble to resolve the resonance problem.  Ivan wouldn't sell anything that didn't work properly and he probably made a loss on these just to show how it should have been done.

Cheers!

PS.  Richard is also using the specially pleated K&N filters which have been folded to a precise angle to complement Ivan's intakes. Wink

Thanks guys, and Mike, you mean crushed in transit? Lol they are much straighter and cleaner now that they have been in the bath haha

I'd just wondered if anyone had done it, and what they had done to overcome the issue with the pipes that usually connect to the airbox?

Obviously some are just drains and drop to the bottom, but the big pipe at the top that connects to the sia, could I just blank it off? I do plan on removing the sai at some point in the future but I do like the sound that you get on the over run which if I remember correctly will be reduced by deleting the sia?

Thanks again

IIRC, there's a breather tube that goes into the airbox from the crankcase and also the AIS air hose.  That's the same as the SAI but not the SIA, which is the French version of the AIS ... Wink Someone has been watching too much Olympics coverage, perhaps?

I digress.  Block the AIS air hose - the big one - with a suitable plug and just make sure that the breather tube doesn't go anywhere that it could drip oily, fuelly stuff onto something important.  Like the rear tyre, for example.

I presume the pleated K&Ns will know be known as the Full DPD mod.  Big Grin

Point Taken Mike.

I wasn't aware Ivan had R&D'd pod filters & mounts.

Not because I should, but because I could! After all, it's not going out in the sun let alone the rain! Haha

This weekend I'll pull the carbs off the bike and change the main jets and fit these. I'll let you know how I get on ?

I know I'm not going to get any more performance but I sure hope it makes a whooshing noise....

Remind me, please, Richard - is there space for the pods with the OE airbox still in place?

If not, you're in for a fun time removing the airbox. Smile

No haha but what many people don't realise is the box separates after removing a few screws which makes removing it so much easier!

I only busted my knuckles on a couple of bikes before I realised that haha ?

Thanks, mate. I knew about the 'box being 2 parts joined by screws but my recollections of the only time I removed one is that it was still a fiddly sod of a job. Smile

Only a 10min job to get airbox out with carbs off.
Like Mike's pointed out it splits into 2 halves, 6 self tappers if memory is correct, put a cloth over engine, drop anything & it'll end up under starter motor (don't ask how I know) ha ha.
I assume you've binned or plan to bin all the crappy AIS system above rocker cover.
Don't forget youll need a filter on end of crankcase breather hose, you'll benefit by having this as high up as poss so any oil mist can drain back down, plenty of space when air box is out, just make a bracket of some sort & mount it where airbox lives ..
K&N do a small breather filter for crankcase venting, I had one on my old tuned ZRX1100 big bore kitted bike  a few yrs ago.
