Been thinking about this for a while now , as we all know the standard can is a bit bland , quite and heavy , I have a scorpion can which is a lot lighter but about the same length , with the baffle in its not much louder tham the standard one , with it out its way too loud , more or less straight through , which is great when I want to let off steam :lol
so was thinking of drilling the rivits out and cutting a lump off , shortening the baffle at the same time , my understanding is "the shorter the can the louder its going to be" not sure if this is correct or not but sounds good :rolleyes
anyone done this before ? How much do i cut off ? Or do i leave both of them on there
I have a carbon Scorpion, and without the baffle the noise level is ok, doesn't grate on the nerves, passes MOTs.
I've always wanted to shorten the link pipe though, purely as a cosmetic thing.
I have a round scorpion. It sounds absolutely fine with the baffle out.
At low revs or rolling about town it’s very civilised.
When you open it up, and the EXUP opens up, it makes plenty of noise.
To answer your original post Red... just drill out the rivets, pull put the insides, chop it down to desired length, then chop down the inner tube (making sure to keep the part where the baffle screws in), re wrap it with fresh exhaust wadding and put it all back in then rivet the it all back together. I think the shortest 'road legal' exhausts are around 380mm but I'm sure plenty of people get away with shorter.
Obviously it will be a bit louder but that's the nature of the beast
I think the standard length looks right.
Plus maybe if you shorten it too much you could effect back pressure, then other exhaust mysteries such as scavenging etc etc.
never thought about the link pipe mr trimmer , not looked at the bike but wouldn't that cause clearence problems ?
thats strange VNA, baffle out on mine and It sounds as If its straight through , looks good on your bike but that could be the massive wardrobe making it look smaller than it is :lol
thanks DUDE , nicly explained , dont want to go too short as iam not too keen on the stubby cans , was thinking of cutting enough off to leave the mounting strap in the middle of the can , always thought with the strap off centre it just didn't look right , might be me though...
wont get to look untill the weekend But i think i'll do a liitle at a time to see what difference it makes.....

Don't think so. Wouldn't achieve what you want of course though.

You mean my handbags.
Well for example I started mine up after work and it sounds almost stock. Then one of my collegues came out and started his decatted fireblade sitting next to mine. That was loud and I could no longer hear the thou.
Are you sure your exup is working OK?
Yeh , exup good , gets serviced every year........I'll fit the scorpion saturday morning and take it for a spin , its been a while since ive used it.... :thumbup
Nice work steve :thumbup ....thats more or less what i was thinking , the unknown to me is how much noise difference cutting x amount off makes , i'll use your picture as a guide scale wise and probably shorten it by half to start with.....dont want to end up with a shortenend can thats too loud :o
ERK... have been pining for smart smaller exhaust can for some time.....purely for cosmetic reasons...the standard can seems to do a good job...
so can't justify buying new one....never occurred to me to cut the std one like u suggest....so rushed out with drill and angle grinder....only to find the mine is welded, not riveted. Back to pining and googling carbon fiber cans on Ebay :b

Slipped the scorpion on this morning and took the baffle out , its not as loud as I remember , iam knocking on a bit now and I have problems with my hearing , parhaps thats what it is , so now its just a cosmetic thing , and I'll still have the choice of baffle in or out........Iam thinking more or less what STEVE has done to VNA 's bike , but I think I'll cut half of that off first to see the difference in noise levels......
