Help with painting

Ok chaps. I have bought panel wipes, etch primer, base coat, top coat, and laquer to repain the front fender on my Virago. Not done this before, so looking for a little advice. I have filled and sanded ready to start painting. Etch primer first, do i rub this coat down or leave it as sprayed? Whatever the answer, then I apply the base coat, agian do I rub this down before applying the top coat. Same again. do I rub the top coat before applying the laquer. Any advice/tips gratefully recived

I don't know the perfect technique and neither does he. Have a look on youtube, there must be hundreds of videos about painting.


Yes those pipes are homemade and loud but not as loud as they were without the baffles.

Jesus that's for rough as you like plastering or seriously badly applied filler! Generally sand with the highest grit you can to minimise work.


Once etched then primer/filler it without sanding. Let that set for 24 hours, guide coat it and hit with a good quality 600 or 800 grit on a block (gently!) and plenty of water and patience, stop when done; don't over sand it or under sand it. Any tiny imperfections can be filled with stopper/ knifing putty but will need priming over. Once happy that it's perfect colour it and clear it. If you are new to it then don't sand it after primer/filler, it will show. Once set sand very gently with 1200 or 1500 and polish. If touched by anything then panel wipe (don't leave the panel wipe on, wipe it off straight away) before applying paint, tack before every coat to remove dust / hairs etc..


It's a learning curve. The environment that you paint in will have a big impact on results.

Etch primed, sanded, wiped, base coat on. Small small pin holes visible, so sanded and base coated agian. Looking ok this time. Will leave now until tomorrow, then sand and top coat?

Bit orange peely, but not too bad. Next onto the fairing lowers I bought earlier this year for the fazer.

The experts on here will probably tell us but I am wondering why the orange peel happens - too much too soon ? I remember once I got a crap finish from a can and it was down to the spray nozzel I had one so bad that it came out more like spitting than spraying. I never throw the nozzel away with the can so that I have some spare should the one I am using become clogged

Yes, on reflection, probably too much to soon. Fairing lowers next, so i'll modify my approach

I have got pretty good at spray can painting, as a kid we used to go behind the local garages and pick up the almost used cans of spray that lazy owners could not be bothered to put in the bin and just dumped and we would spray our push bikes I think mine looked like gay pride  :lol
