Replacing HT Leads and Plug Caps/Boots

Got a bust cap and misfire on cylinder 4. So reckon it's time to replace. Any recommendations, tips, gotchyas with the Fazer? NGK leads/caps the way to go?

Did this job once before on an old ZZR600, with new NGK leads and caps, was pretty straight forward. Is the Fazer similar?


And are these the right caps?

Will the straight one fit (SD05F) or better to get a bent one like original (XD05F)?

Most here replace with the plug above,you will have to compare dimensions of the XD05-F plug with the original ones that they will be long enough to clear the cylinder head.
As for the leads not really sure how easy they are to change as I believe they are fixed to the coils.

Straight caps fit fine, just chop 10mm off the end of the leads and screw the new caps on until they feel tight.
As bandit says the leads are fixed to the coils.
Over time the inner wires get pushed into the outer plastic casing so it's just a case of refreshing the ends.

Fitted new caps. Dead easy, quick job. All good and running on all cylinders now.
Couldn't trim any off cylinder 2 lead as already a spot short, but is working fine nonetheless.

Did you try rerouting them? Many I have seen are twisted all over the place, making them appear shorter than they are

Nah, just quickly patched it up in 15 mins yesterday morning between getting kids ready for school and zooming off for work! But yeah, next time tank is off I'll take a peek as see how they're routed. Either way, bike is running really well now huge difference, so smooth and more ummph now, makes me believe they had been slowly deteriorating for a while.

I had managed to change the ht leads at my coils with success.
Its a bit risky job,but ok.The oem leads are glued to the coils with some kind of epoxy maybe(?).
I removed them and clean the hole,at the end inside the coils there is something like a spike.
Install the new ones with some high heat silicone-gasket silicone.
Everything seems fine for months now.
I wish i could afford some dynatec doils!


One mod i did these days,is i took the oem spark plug caps and removed the resistor they have inside.(i have allready ngk spark plugs)
After some internet research,you dont need a resitance spark plug cap when you have a resistance spark plug allready.
It seem to work better at low revs,but nothing sure yet,maybe its my mind. :b

Is there a screw in type connection under the epoxy or is it just the epoxy that holds the lead in?

I'll be trying the rubber plug caps next time. They're one piece so I think they'll keep the water out better than the ones with the rubber boot on the end

The only problem with the straight ones is that the HT lead itself tends to duct water into the top of the cap. But I guess they could be sealed with some black silicon sealant at the point the lead disappears into the cap
I bought some with the cranked top but were too short in the body and the cranked part of the cap hit the camshaft tunnel moulding before the popped over the plugs. Don't you just love wasting 18 quid?

i coated my HT with grease just above the cap before sliding the rubber boot back down onto the cap it helps keep any water out that might possible seep through - black rtv sealant would work even better


ive replaced ht's from sealed coils before and its a time consuming job i just sat on the sofa with a tray below me to catch the crap while watching tv
cut off the old ht and started picking at it with a threaded bradawl (Gimlet) then a small screwdriver to cut out any other crap
i put a new ht lead in and once tested i sealed it in with a black epoxy i had laying around - any epoxy will do but i had black coils and black ht leads so it made sense to use the black.

i have seen a link on that somewhere but it started a big argument about resistance and how it runs in series so it only got half the voltage
it was on my want list and still may become part of the build but im on the fence on this one

disagree about half the voltage it is a worthwhile upgrade on a cbr 600 so it wouldnt be any different on a fazer
