New tyres? Yes or no

Hi I have been lucky enough to buy a 2005 fz6 on a 05 plate low mileage 7000.
While checking the tyre's condition I thought I would check the age of the tyre front dot 2604 &  rear dot 3204.
Their is no visual damage or cracking to tread or side walls, and plenty of tread left on them, so the question is would you replace them due to age or not?  If you would replace to what trye ( dry weather riding only)

Both tyres are well over 12 years old. I would change them without a second thought.


Tyre choice is quite personal, whatever has worked for you in the past might be best.


I always work on two rules for vehicles - 1) never skimp on tyres or brakes and 2) never skimp on tyres or brakes.
is it clean enough?

Me too. I'd change tyres if they were two years old or more. Nothing beats new tyres, feels like you've got a new bike, and there cheap as chips nowadays. I got a pair of pirellis for me zzr1100 for £128 from " round and black" on eBay, local tyre place fitted And balanced them both to loose wheels for £20, £150 gets you peace of mind , even if you don't ride in the wet your bound to get caught in the rain sometime, and modern rubber is unbelievably good on wet roads now

Feck yes I'd change them if they're 12 yrs old  :eek . A step down from the premium tyres would be something like the Maxxis Supermaxx Diamond or Metzeler Z6 if it's summer use only. I don't hang about but couldn't ride around the Metzelers. As said, tyres are very much a personal choice.

I know people say "dry weather riding only" but if you live in the UK is that statement even possible?
I only have to look at my bike at work and it rains, and it will normally stop about half a mile from my home.


My point is, i would still buy a tyre that's at least proven to be "okay" in the wet at the very least, 'cos there would be nothing worse than being caught in a sudden storm then finding out that your bike slides better than Torville & Dean.


Try and find a garage or mechanic that will happily fit a new tyre with a loose wheel that you've removed from the bike yourself and you will save a bundle of money in the process, even after they've charged you a small fee to fit them.


I'm like a lot of people on here that believe tyres and brakes are VERY important to a rider so it's just best to do things right where they're concerned.

Ultimately your choice on how much you spend. Me - I stick with PR3's and 4's on my bikes because I like them (cost more than the Metzelers but I feel better on them in the wet)..........but that's just me. EBC pads as well, nothing else (again my choice). As Darrsi said - the 2 most important parts on a bike.
Those are my principles...if you don't like them I have others.

Is the FZ6 a 180 rear?


I prefer the Michelin Road Pilot 3/4's, but as mentioned the Tyre choice is very personal. I have tried Battleaxe, Angel ST, and Avon Storms.


I like SBS pads.

Thanks for all the advice,  will buy and get fitted new tyres before putting the bike back on the road.
Now just need to choose what tyre to go for,  I tried maxxis diamond on a previous bike and didn't like them at all

Bridgestone BT023 is a proven very good all rounder, that people on here have got plenty of mileage out of before.
Don't be swayed by a £10-£15 price difference either, because it'll mean nothing over time.
Why not ask the question on the FZ6 forum as well, what the best all rounder is just for general riding?

I've run BT23s ever since i have had the bike, recently switched to PR3/4 combo, and what a biking revelation soooooo much better.

Are the 4's much better than 3's, i was under the impression that the 3's were pretty much the mutt's nuts after reading discussions on here?


Cant get a 110 PR4 so probably running a PR3 front and PR4 rear

Friend of mine bought some bargain 'new' tyres earlier this year from a reputable dealer on Ebay, and when they arrived they were DOT 2009. Shifting old stock, and they had been sitting in a warehouse for 7 years! Got his money back, but nevertheless  :eek

Thanks again for all the advice, but one thing I have noticed and need to question is why run a 110 front as my front wheel is 120. So surely it's better to run pr3's or pr4's front and back
