Popping after AIS removal?
#1
So today I finally got round to lifting the tank on my bike. And what a pleasant surprise! The air box mod had been done and as I dug deeper I saw that the AIS has been removed and the block off plates fitted (I think lol)
Thing is I've always had the popping on deceleration which I thoughthink was suppose to attributed to the AIS system?  Are there any other causes for it?

Also now I realise I really should get a power commander as I have the air box mod and an aftermarket exhaust without the exup so I would imagine the bike is being held back by poor fueling?

I've added some pics of what I found under there. Can anyone tell me which air filter this is so I can replace it when the time comes?

Looks like a Pipercross air filter to me which are  cleanable, ( is that a word? ), probably you are getting popping because  you are sucking more air in due to the airbox mods and the filter flows more air than a standard one, you might be running lean as well which is not good in the long run.

I did think that ? obviously the engines sucking in more air but isn't getting more fuel. I know it is bad for the bike in the long term and I've no idea how long it's been running like that? Got no chance of buying a power commander till after Xmas now though ? I'm sure it will be find till then won't it?

its defo piper cross, make sure it doesn't dry out as it could make your bike miss fire, cleaning kits are available for them, less than £20 for a cleaner and an oil,i easily get 4 clean and re-oils out of them, imho better than k&n for cleaning and re oiling its simpler
[/size]OH I NEARLY FORGOT TO SAY,DON'T THROW IT AWAY,it doesn't need replacing.

Thanks Mick. It was dry as a bone to be honest. I'll have a look at one of them kits then :-)

So I know it a pipercross now but does anyone have an idea of which size or for what model I will have to look for (in the future)
Obviously if I order one for a FZ1 it'll be too small?

you need to clean and re oil it mate asap,it will make your bike run much better,it might eliminate the other probs you have

Just wondering if there's anyway to richen the mixture of this bike without a power commander? Isn't there an equivalent to the mixture screw on a carbed bike?

No mixture screw, putting a stock airbox and air filter back on should stop it running too lean.

Ah can't be bothered with that much messing about. I'll just have to fit a fuel manager. I'm 99% sure the bike had one on before I bought it but the previous owner has removed it to either sell or use on the R1 he replaced it with ??
The bikes has too many mods and had too much money spent on it for him not to have bothered with a pc?

it is my belief that a dry foam or paper airfilter makes your bike missfire,i went through this problem a few year back, his airbox has been opened up and the bikes taking in too much unregulated air.
cleaning and reoiling the pipercross filter he has will imho make his bike run correct
if i'm wrong please feel free to say i was wrong or even call me names i can take it x

Well ive just got a pc3, should be here later this week.

So instead of starting another 'which map' topic I figure i'd ask to see for suggestions.

I know I need a stage 2 map. Ive downloaded dukens zip file full of them from the other site so I have some to choose from. I just dont have a clue how they differ or which one will work best
I will be getting a custom one sometime next summer but will need a decent map to use till then

My mods are:
Akra slip on
Exup removed
Modified airbox
Ais removed
Not sure if the cat is still on?
O2 sensor still in

Will I need to remove the o2 or is it fine leaving it in?

Anyway any suggestions would be great
Thanks

I tried various maps from dukens, two brothers and dynojet, some gave some improvement but were not perfect, others were terrible! I had a little route of about 25 miles that included busy traffic areas, nice country roads and dual carriageway and spent a couple of months pissing about with different maps until I bit the bullet and booked it in on the dyno.

I can email you a copy of my map to try out if you want, just pm me your email address , I won't be able to do it till Thursday / Friday as it is stored on my sons' laptop.

The mods I am running are:-
Akropovic slip on.
Ais blocked off.
K & N air filter with standard airbox.
Cat removed from collector box.
I also have an 02 " optimizer " fitted, came with the JuiceBox Pro, It just fits where the 02 sensor wire from the exhaust connects to the main wiring harness, I have no idea what it really does, possibly to stop ecu reading a fault??
By the way it was a pain in the arse to find and disconnect the connector?

That'd be great cheers!!
I'll pm you in a sec.

As for the o2 sensor, what would happen is I simply unplugged it? Would it start giving error codes all the time?
Or what is I unscrewed it from the exhaust but left it plugged in?

I not totally sure but I think the 02 sensor is just for emission regulations, I have seen on the American FZ site where some have just disconnected it, some have fitted an 02 eliminator and some have just left it connected. Nobody seems to know for sure but I have never seen anyone say it caused error codes but because mine came supplied and the instructions said to fit it so I did!
You could just disconnect it and see what happens Smile

Received your email Ian. Many thanks ?
And I also got the pc3 through today so hopefully on Tuesday I'm going to have a play day and get it fitted as well as remove the o2 sensor (bought an o2 eliminator plug and a blanking bolt) and give the air filter a good clean and oil. Hopefully this time next week I'll have it running on top form ??
