Excuse the dumb question guys if it seems that way, but is my clutch slipping at higher revs or is there some other sort of valve or timing control that kicks in higher up in the rev range?
Ive noticed when giving it some that the revs seem to pick up quite suddenly higher up in the rev range but it doesnt seem to lose any power, gain some if actually. Maybe its not the clutch im wondering lol
Hi. How long have you had the bike? Has it been sat for a while before you have ridden it? When we're the carbs last cleaned?
Basically I think you may have a flat spot in the mid range rather than all of a sudden more power.... well in a sense you do get more power all of a sudden. But due to the flat spot. If that makes sense :eek
I would suggest getting the carbs cleaned and valve clearances checked and go from there
Sounds similar to what I had with mine. It almost feels like a 'step' in the power delivery.
If thats what it feels like, then it's possibly slight clutch slip. Does it happen at about 7k? And does it only happen within the first 5 or so miles?

Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!
HI Jamie,
My Fazer FZS 600 has a real kick in power from 7.5K onwards, but to be honest it pulls well from 2K on-wards, the bike is quick all the way through the rev range but when it hits around that 7.5 mark hang on to the throttle it and it will take off like a rabbit on steroids.
If I really want to tramp on I will hang on to 4th 5th gear until I hit the 11 to 12K mark flick into top and the bike will drop down a couple of K and will climb quickly up to Oh shit! time to slow down.
My baby is good for----- (According to the Speedo it showed 146mph) but my Sat Nav disagreed and said 'don't tell lies' my Tom Tom gave it 138mph and to be honest I think that is about all she has, but the bike pulls all the way to Max.
She now has 38 thousand on the clock, I bought it 3 years ago with 27 thousand mile on board, the previous owner was meticulous with the maintenance and I have been the same with it and done servicing on or before the recommended mileage points, I use full synth oil 'Shell Advance 4T' well its good to treat the lady in your life well.
To find out if the clutch is slipping you could get the bike up to say 30mph in 2nd gently pull the front brake on with a couple of fingers and open the throttle you will hear and feel if the clutch slips, if revs rise but bike does not struggle against the brake or increase in speed the clutch could be the culprit, if not then your good to go.
If you do try the above make sure your not on a wet or slippery road and it gravel/grit free.
Its difficult to say at what rpm it happens as im too concentrated in holdning on and watching the tarmac. It doesnt seem to happen all the time though. Its wierd. Im not sure how long it has been stood as i bought it from a garage.

If you going to be a tarmac watcher look at it where it disappears around the bend up ahead. The Vanishing Point.

Or you could be like me two years ago, I pulled up at a T junction, slightly uphill and I was turning to the right. Wanting to be a gentleman I waved a very fit little jogger who just happened to be wearing some very body hugging leggings/tights past, she was approaching from my right as she went by I was really concerned for her safety so watched her progress with keen interest I cranked my head much to far to the left lost balance bike fell to the right flipped me over the bars and split my fairing and busted a wandercater.
That's the last time I shall be concerned for joggers.
Well until the next little hotty jogs by.

There is a power boost around the 7000rpm spot, which if all working correctly you should feel quite noticeably by the bike surging forward.
If it was the clutch slipping then the engine would also rev higher but you would technically be slowing down.
Have a look at a Haynes manual and learn how to adjust the clutch cable at both ends, it may just need that, if there is actually a problem.
If after adjusting it still feels like it's possibly slipping, then it could be a worn cable so it will need replacing, which i would totally recommend buying a Yamaha OEM one, don't buy any old cheap shit.
If that still doesn't help, then you would be looking at a change of clutch plates.
If you're saying it's gaining power though, then it all sounds fairly normal to be honest.
You would still benefit in getting a Haynes manual and learning how to adjust the clutch cable though.
There is an online manual on here you can browse beforehand, but that's not much good when you've got greasy hands and are outside working on the bike, a book wins every time.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Haynes-hardbac...SwLF1X-Sum thanks mate, that sounds most plausible. I dont really think its the clutch as it does seem to surge.
I'd agree with darrsi's post. What you describe sounds quite normal to me.
Mine pulls a fair bit stronger from around 7000 RPM (accompanied by a marked increase in induction roar).

Post up a pic of your daughter Tommy if she's over 18
Those are my principles...if you don't like them I have others.
I wouldn't go throwing a load of money at it until I was sure there was an issue. Does your rev counter/speedo climb at the same rate everytime you pass through those rev's?
Forget Tommys daughter, I've some interesting one's of his wife if your interested........... :eek
Complete fabrication, I didn't make it up!
