Best tyres Sports Touring Tyres for the Old Girl
#1
Hello Forum, wonder if you can save may aging eyes in searching, not been using my 2002 FZS 1000 for quite a few years, just wondering what's the best ST tyres out now?  Got some Avons Storms bought back in 2010 that have been really good in terms of grip but need a new set so what do you recommend these days?

Thanks in advance.

If you got on with the Avon Storms I would recommend the new Storm 3D-XM, I much prefer the way the bike handles on Storms than the equivalent Bridgestone's and they last about 10% longer too. I keep meaning to try Michelin Pilot Roads as a lot of folks on here like them but to be honest I just keep going back to the Avons as I get on with them really well.

I've just put RoadSmart 3 on my Tiger Sport and they have been fab

My Fazer 1000 has Smart 2 on, as when I brought it. I will probably fit Smart 3 next time.

They were very good, wet and dry on the Tiger on our recent 2000 mile Alps trip and saved my arse when we hit a muddy patch one rainy day.

Thanks, I bet a few others will get recommended.  Next problem is a recommended dealer to fit them & not damage my rims.  I live in the North West & last dealer has shut, any suggestions there?

Thanks again in advance.

I have had RoadSmart 1 & 2's on my Gen 1 and will be going with the 3's in a weeks time. I had Pilot Road 1's which were great to about 2/3 worn and then felt shit. I have also had BT020's but they are old and replaced with the T30 now.

I used to use TST near warrington but they seem to have closed.

I am getting my new set at Hammer and Tongs in Warrington for its MOT.

Metzeler M5 sportecs
grippy enough for 1'50's around cadwell yet gave another 4k miles afterwards.
most S/T tyres are better than 99% of the riders that use them.

Had a pair of Pilot Road 2's on them last time, PERFECT, need slipped/spun once in over 7k miles.

Fitted a new pair of Pilot Road 2's, from the shop to France and back, nicely scrubbed in and in torrential rain the whole way, never spun once. Great bits of rubber are the Pilot Roads.

Cheers

I used to favour PR2s. Never had any complaints, except they didn't last so long with mixed riding. I got through a summer pair in 4000 miles, front and rear, but most of that was 'spirited' riding. Now wondering about manufacturing dates on them, as they've actually been superseded for quite some time now, but if you find them within useable dates, not a bad tyre and will be cheap. I've now switched to PR4s, and once again, can't fault them so far. Not had a pair on long enough to really say about how well they last, but looking good at approx 3000 miles - still loads left. They've also done quite a bit of motorway work and haven't flattened off at all on the centre lines. Confidence inspiring in the worst of wet conditions too. Rode in pissing rain on twisty Alpine roads, mountain "goat tracks", motorways, the lot, and it occurs to me they didn't give me reason on a single occasion to even be thinking about how well they did, just got on with riding. Same in the dry at faster paces.

This of course doesn't mean that you will like them, but overall, with a few exceptions, reviews are usually pretty good on any of the Pilot Road series.
Can't comment on anything else, cos I haven't used anything else in recent years.

I find the T30's to be brilliant.

My favorite so far has been the Pilot Road 3's. I found them marginally better than the Pilot Road 2's in the wet, yet still gave a good ride in the dry. Couldn't fault them really.

Storm 3D-XM.  Met a guy whilst waiting for my MOT on a 1200 bandit that carries roughly the same combined weight I do when the wife's on board.  After 2K of heavy use they looked fine. Have been very impressed with the older Storm ST's in the past. Getting them fitted Monday.

I agree, they are excellent tyres. I've done 10,000 klms on them so far and they still grip.

Getting some Roadtec 01s fitted tomorrow. Looking forward to finding out if they live up to the hype.
