My first bike!!! Fz6n but is cutting out whilst on idle or low revs
#1
Hello one and all!!!

Just a quick message to say hi and to ask advice on a problem I had yesterday whilst driving MY FIRST BIKE back from the garage. When stopping at traffic lights or on low revs plodding through built up areas my 54 plate fz6n was cutting out on me and was a bit temperamental to start back up. As I'm a first time rider I don't know my bike well enough yet, so was wondering if anyone could help

Hello and welcome and congrats on the bike Smile

You need to start with simple steps first:

Have you regulated your idle speed? It must be about 1200ish. Check your manual.

New bike I would change the plugs. The low rev issue sometimes is due to the plug caps bad connection. Put some Vaseline around the lead to sort it out.

Download the manuals from the download section here: http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads

Than synchronize throttle bodies:

2004-07 Fazer also have known issues with throttle position sensor TPS. Here what to do how to test and fix it:

To check the TPS values, you have to press and hold SELECT + RESET, then turn the key and keep them pressed for 8 more seconds.

It'll appear dIAg on the display, you can release them now. Afterwards use select until you see a d01 (Diagnostic Mode for the TPS)

Then it should read between 15 and 17 if the throttle is closed,
With the throttle fully open, it should read between 97 and 100.

If the values are over or below those I mentioned, the TPS should be replaced.

To leave the dIAG mode, simply turn the key counter clockwise.

Welcome to Fazership!
If you bought your bike from a garage/trader/dealer why not ask them to put it right?
Let us know the outcome.

My apologies on not uploading a picture of my pride and joy (my face says it all really). Haven't got a name for her yet (suggestions are welcome).

I'm from South Wales and bought the bike from a private seller in Stafford. So it's a bit of a journey to take it back sadly.

I did ring the guy earlier and he did say the bike had been standing for a while with a fair amount of petrol in it. So I'm thinking possible cause of problem? She was almost empty very close to home, so I've put some nice, fresh 98 octain petrol in it.

On checking the service book too, found out it was last serviced in 2014 when it had 12350 miles on the clock. It's now 2016 and has 12945 mile on it. So I've bought oil, oil filter, air filter and spark plugs and intend to give it a service. What are the service intervals on a 54 plate fz6n.

If the petrol and service doesn't do the trick, I'll have to work through systematically everything you guys have suggested.

Sadly, I won't be able to do anything to it for a while as I have to go away with work  :'(

Thanks again

Shall keep you posted

that bike looks great  :thumbup

Get the owners and service manuals from here they will explain all about the service: http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads;cat=3

There owners manual say oil change service interval is 10000km (about 6000 miles). The filter needs change each 20000km (12000 miles). I would change both for your service and than continue according to the manual.

Hi Lloydy_Pants, did you sort out the problem?

I have a similar problem with my 2004 FZ6S...it runs fine, and then the engine cuts out when I roll off the throttle to come to a stop. If I restart without turning the ignition off it doesn't run very well. If I turn ignition off and then on and restart it runs just fine again.

It only happens sometimes, but is a bit frustrating.

Thanks for your help

I think you've answered your own question if it's been sat for a while with fuel in it!  Most likely a full service and cleaning of the fuel system will get her right again.  Nice bike and, apparently, in the fastest colour although I don't agree  :lol
