Engine Troubles on a Fazer 600 '99

Hi Guys,


Although i'm unknown on this forum currently it's safe to say that many of my issues have been resolved after a google search which brought up answers to my questions from this site, I have now joined so hello!


I bought this Fazer for cheap, really cheap knowing it had some issues.

• Spark Plugs have been changed
  
• Fuel Filter
  
• New Coil for 2/3
  
• Refurbished rear caliper (they have been oven baked as they were extremely seized).
  
• Rear Tyre change
  
• New Mirrors
  
• New Levers
  
• Full oil change with new Filter
  

All I've got left really is to change the chain and sprockets.


I have one issue currently which I do not seem to find an answer to and that's popping. The engine pops. In idle and when letting go of the throttle I notice it the most. It's rather frustrating. On top of that the 2nd and 3rd Pipes which join the exhaust aren't hot. They do get warm but not to the point where it can burn your hand like Pipe 1 and 4 can get.


I rode 1100+ miles over the weekend on a tour and it's been like it since I started so it surely can't be too disastrous. Any help is much appreciated to getting at the bottom of these issues and i'm offering cookies for advice!

Welcome.
Presumably 2&3 chime in once the revs get up a bit, I can't believe you'd ride 1000+ miles on two cylinders!
Combustion problems are either mixture, compression or sparks.
Examining the spark plug tips can give you a fair bit of info about the mixture and checking the spark is easy enough, just bear in mind that the cam cover is insulated so get the spark to jump to a cam cover bolt or some other part that's connected to ground.
Make sure the carbs are balanced and the throttle position sensor is set correctly.
There's a good chance that there are some blocked jets or problems with the float valve. Drain the carbs and catch what comes out.. water or grimy/rusty petrol would indicate that a good clean is needed.
Check the fuel level in each float bowl using the clear plastic tube on the drain method.. details in the downloadable manual.

At low revs the bike sounds really low and almost like it's struggling but when the revs are high then it seems much better!


Will give that ago this weekend, I have swapped around the plugs and 1/4 continuously are hot as expected.

Could be a vac leak on one or more of the cylinders, what condition are the carb rubbers in?

Between the carbs and cylinders? They are really bad and will be replaced. I have used silicone to fix it temporarily. I now know there is definitely a leak in the exhaust (i'll take a pic where) the popping noise isn't from the exhaust though, It's in the engine somewhere.

Cylinders 2 and 3 are on the same coil, check it also.

The popping could also be the result of and air leak after the carbs which also points to the intake manifold rubbers.

I've just replaced the coil after other issues which it appeared to sort out.

I would agree with unfazed as to the coils & also make sure the downpipes aren't blowing from the exhaust manifold gaskets which will suck in air causing popping/rough running tends to be worse when opening the throttle.

get the carbs balanced and reset the TPS that may cure your problems.
popping is fairly common with after market cans on the over run and isn't a problem.
