i work on building sites and today was told to put my hard hat on whilst using a sthill saw with a dust mask on.        gogles and ear muffs. no room for the hat.  as it falls of with that lot on,    also i was under a 18 inch concrete roof so nothing is going to fall..      the bloke who told me was a seikh so had his little turban thing on. :lol    and his knife on his side which i would of thought is an offensive weapon.    so i  told him to do one.  how the fuck can he wear that as an hard hat,,    is this Bristol or india.

Where I work we have to wear bump caps or hard hats in certain areas, Sikhs don't have to as they are exempt due to religious reasons, wonder what would happen if something heavy landed on their head, would it be classed as putting themselves at risk?
Nothing against Sikhs, most of them are good lads and pretty relaxed ,at least you can have a laugh with them.

I thought they could only wear the knife on special occasions, never seen many with them except at a wedding I went to, mind you you cannot use a knife where I work unless you have permission and are on the knife register, now that is foccing stupid  health and safety.

If they have an off on a motor bike and suffer a minor head injury they should be charged for their treatment, their religion prevents them wearing a crash helmet, let their religion pay for their treatment. But fair to say I have worked with a few and mostly top blokes I like them.

Taylor - I thought all building sites were hard hat areas. Always makes me laugh when I see a bunch of builders on a site where they haven't even broken the ground yet and they are all stood in a field with hard hats on.

Slappy - Because the knife is religious symbol they are allowed them on all the time. They are even allowed to take them through airport security :eek

Lew - The religion doesn't stop them wearing a helmet, the long hair held in place by the turban makes finding one that fits impossible. Cut their hair - problem solved.

BBrown the religous symbol is the long hair, not the turban. The turban is worn to keep it in place. Their religion forbids them from cutting their hair, hence the beards as well.

To cut someones hair, use scissors, clippers or a razor, it won't make their head fall off or have some almighty demon come down and prod them to death.
It's a blatant flout of laws using bullshit religious beliefs to bend the rules, especially where safety is concerned.  :grumble

I am not religious. But religion is tightly tied with tradition for many people. It is a part of identity and provides lots of inner strength for some people. I don't want people rubbing their religion on my nose, but also would never give them trouble, as long as it doesn't interfere with non-believers. It is his head after all.


Where I live, with all "joining the EU" laws and bullshit, now there's pressure of making helmets obligatory for cycling, next thing will be helmets for walking the street - just in case, it IS safer. Making idiots out of people, like we're children.
