Exhaust upgrades

Thinking about whether or not to upgrade my exhaust system on my 98 Fazer to something that sounds a bit nicer. The standard exhaust is fine but its a bit too quiet and I'd rather cars etc could hear me a bit better.

My local mechanic has tried to talk me out of an upgrade saying that nothing is better suited to the bike than the standard system especially with regards to the downpipes.

Not really keen on doing any re-jetting or anything just looking for a straight bolt on swap. I have found someone in Australia who sells full Motad systems.

Just wondering if anyone has had any problems after fitting different exhausts with the way the bike runs?

Keep the standard downpipes for as long as possible, or basically until they disintegrate.
The bike wizard who tweaks my bike on the dyno has always said the same, he reckons they are way superior to any aftermarket pipes you can ever buy.


Have a look on YouTube to give you a rough idea on exhaust notes.
From experience and also personal opinion go for something midrange in regards to noise, it WILL drive you bonkers eventually otherwise.
I have a noisy one, and a reasonable one, which i change per mood, but in reality the less noisy end can wins without a doubt.


Changing the end can will more than likely result in the bike needing a carb balance to make it run true, in fact it's a must.

i have a black widow slip on exhaust i got off an ebay store. Its Loud! like... stupid loud with the baffle out it runs a little rough so needs a carb balence. baffle in its not to bad, and doesent give you a headache....
I know Sinto runs a scorpion that sounds nice and is not overly loud.
Suppose it depends on how loud you want and if you want to rebalence carbs / filter change.

Thanks for the response guys, some good looking/sounding exhausts.

Glad to hear someone else has been told what I have about the downpipes darrsi. My downpipes are in pretty good nic so I'll keep those on. Interesting to note that the carbs will need balanced although they're probably due for that anyway.

Last month I fitted a Delkavic oval can which I'm really pleased with, like you just wanted a better sound from the bike without being anti social. Great looking can and good quality at a reasonable price £129ish, bolted straight on, oh had to order a link pipe £30  Smile

Got the Motad Venom kit on. All good quality and reasonable price, but not that loud, even with baffle out. Really not much louder than stock.

They're made from mild steel, if they're in good condition i would suggest a lick of spray/paint to increase the life, 'cos they are certainly better than replacements.
I would seriously recommend a K&N air filter though if changing the end can, and you WILL need a carb balance, but the end result will be very worthwhile.

The SP Engineering end can in the video is totally road legal, all marked up and baffled, and is shown with the baffle in.
I tried it once without and admittedly it sounded astounding but would be certainly classed in the category of "taking the piss".

Did someone on here not open up the original end-can to ease restriction / get some more noise?
Might be the best compromise (and certainly one of the cheaper options)

I have a scorpion can on mine. Which I love.

Up to 4000-5000rpm it not loud at all, it just gives the engine a deeper note. Beyond that it gets a bit louder but nit taking the p* until it gets about 10,000 then it is a bit of a screamer.

It does some lovely crackles and pops on the down ships and slowing fir junctions but is not crazy at all.

It's marked not road legal but the mot testers never complain. I've passed plenty of coppers and unless I'm ragging it they never bat an eyelid.

I bought the bike with after market stainless downpipes, k&n filter and to my knowledge standard carbs(?).

Actually I think I'm going for a ride now....

Still a big fan of Blue Flame pipes (have them on 3 bikes) - also have a Remus (on the FJ12), awesome Kerker cans on the VF750 and have had a few Motad's in recent times.


The fact that we now have 3 bikes with Blue Flames tells you what we think - best combination of quality, sound, durability, looks & price - road legal but with really easily removed baffles.

Shame the Harris 'works' exhaust isn't available to fit the FZS, I think it would suit the bike I know Hyde still make them but at £500 + nobodies going to buy one just to hack the end off

Fitted the SP engineering stubby big bore to mine , it took  Bit of power away , but it sounds fantastic in 1st at 8k rpm , I have since had Ivans full Monty done to it and that makes a bell of difference.

My exhaust,
Really pleased with the looks, the sound although it's a bit pricey on the retail front, about £270 if you look for it on ebay, but bring Scottish I certainly didn't pay that :b
