Just a quick but hopefully straight forward question, how and where should I wire in a Satnav? its only +ive and -ve but should I wire straight to the battery or into the ignition? If the latter where is best? Please use simple words and explanations as I'm a numpty on the tools..... lol. :rolleyes

I took two wires from the battery , live with a fuse , then connected to a cigarette lighter socket mounted on the front,side panel..easy
An ageing test pilot for home grown widgets that may fail at anytime.
I fitted a plug to mine and it is connected via the Optimate charging socket under the seat.
I could change my opinion, but then we'd both be wrong.
its a bike specific unit, garmin 660 zumo, with a charging cradle so thing wiring it straight to the horn might be the most straight forward and about up to my ability. thanks guys. wont be doing it till sunday at the earliest so if anyone else has better advice please let me know.

So is mine, but still wired it via charging lead. Never had any problems.

I have a Tom Tom rider with a mount and I just wired it to the battery and have had problems
It might work with the direct wiring to the battery. But I am not happy with that because the + 5 V pin of the charging cradle is always live and the voltage converter will draw a little current even without the nav installed. This current wil be only some mA but why should I stress the battery with that.

Can't understand what you're fussing about.
Just do what I do and unplug it when you've finished with it. Simples.

Wire a relay in and mount it on the outside of the subframe but still in the rear bodywork wire the switch circuit to the no plate light
Then it wont be live when the ignition is off
Connecting a wire to the horn has the same effect and it is much easier.

Well going to wire it in shortly and going for the "wire to the horn" as that sounds the easiest and most straight forward to me. also think it will be easiest when i take it off if i change the bike, thinking about that at the moment. Thanks Guys.

Go straight to the battery that way the satnav always has power via the cradle, don't worry about battery drain as you take the unit off when you leave the bike so no power drain. Ran my Garmin like this never had a problem

You cannot generalize that. I have measured the cradle of my Zumo 660 and of my Zumo 500 without nav.
With the 500 cradle the reading was 0 but with the 660 cradle 72,5 mA. Somtimes older stuff is better 
Well I stand corrected but I was using a 390lm on a hard wired cradle for just over two years and never had a problem !

Told you all that I was a numpty on the tools, it didn't work. wired it to the horn but didn't charge the unit when I put it in the cradle. tried it both ways in case the red wire wasn't the +ve but that didn't work. Had a friendly "know it all" offer his opinion but that didn't make a difference so ended up wiring it straight to the battery for now but would still prefer it to go off with the ignition. could it be that there isn't enough power going to the horn? Or is it just that "if it wasn't for bad luck i'd have none?" Help???

The wiring of the horn is the same on your 98-99 like on my 2003 Fazer and my 1999 TDM. Brown is +12V via ignition switch and pink is ground via horn button. On my Fazer the horn has a 10 A fuse that should be quiet similar on the early models. This is more than enough for the nav.

The fuse is fine and the horn still working but the Sat nav did not register it was charging when wired to the horn but did when put straight on to the battery, is there any reason why this might be? I just thought that it would be 12v and work yet it seems to get more complicated? If I can't wire in a Sat nav then I will never get my project bike, Pan euro st1100, on the road!!!!!!!!! Agh!!!!
