Help!! Clutch replacement now doesn't drive....
#1
Hi everyone. First time posting. I have a 1999 Fazer 600. Bike has done 40k. Noticed it was slipping around 7k ish when riding,  assumed clutch so ordered EBC clutch and heavy duty springs. Fitted it all today but now bike doesn't drive. When I engage the clutch it makes a slight noise behind the clutch cover. Any suggestions?  Matt

hi bullettooth,

welcome to the site Smile

You may want to have a search of the forum, a lot fo users who have replaced the clutch, and have used the EBC heavy duty springs have reported problems, some have managed it fine, but for some it has caused issues that have prevented the clutch from working properly due to the springs being a bit too strong.

just a thought for you.

Thank-you for the reply. Yes I was thinking about putting the standard springs back in as a test. Will do that and report back

What exactly is the problem? Can you engage a gear but the bike doesn't pull forward, or can you not engage any gears at all?

If it is the former then I'd say the clutch needs adjusting - most likely on the left hand side cover (remove the rubber grommet to get at the adjustment nut / screw combo)

If you can't actually select any gears then it could be either the springs that are too strong and not allowing the clutch to disengage, or again adjustment.

It's worth while checking to make sure that the pressure plate is seated correctly. I made that mistake as I thought it was fine, but it was out by about 2mm - removed it, spun it round and re-fitted until it sat flush. Don't be tempted to tighten the spring bolts beyond the recommended torque - they will snap and you will need a new clutch cage... again, voice of experience Sad

Did you make any adjustments to the clutch mechanism on the sprocket cover?
If not are you sure the pressure plate is located correctly. It does not just go on in any position, you need to move it around to get the correct position. You will know when it is correct as it slots in better in the correct position.

I would advise returning to OEM springs, the heavy duty ones ruin the already good smooth clutch as they are too strong and will also cause undue wear on the clutch mechanism where the cable fits on in the sprocket cover

I had a similar issue the other week, I hadn't sat the top plate properly, flush in the basket before doing up the 6 sprung loaded bolts.

As already said, you will also need to fiddle about adjusting the clutch at the lever and sprocket cover.
