Unleaded or super unleaded ?

Basically just wanted get other people opinions onit, much difference in relation to cost ?

I stick a tank full of shells V power in now and then in the belief it might help to keep the fuel system clean

In the Fazer it's hard to tell any difference, in the C90 the bike feels quicker and in the car I get around 3 MPG more and it seems a little smoother.

PERSONALLY I think the bike runs best on 97 fuel, I occasionally put in 99 which can make it feel nippier but is obviously the most expensive, but I really don't like using standard 95, it just doesn't feel great to me.

I occasionally stick in some super and the only thing I reckon it does is make the exhaust bubble and gurgle more when I roll off the throttle.


If it's commuting, normal petrol, if I want to act all Billy Big Balls and sound good, super petrol  Smile [size=78%] [/size]

put a gallon in yesterday of some fuel i had lying around. riding in to work today the bike was noticeably more responsive, then i realised it was the trackbikes 98 ron in the can.
or it could have been the cold, denser air at 630am as well.
The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people's money!

I use Shell's VPower in all my vehicles (99 RON)

All of them will run on standard 95 RON but I can live with paying a little more to help keep the fuel systems clean. The cars get a little better MPG, up to 10% maybe (but I rarely ever see 30 MPG anyway) but this doesn't cover the extra cost of the fuel.

huh, super+ is 7% dearer where i live..................so 10% better mpg would be a bonus, if i'm not mistaken!

This is true, but I'm not convinced that an economical engine will be able to take advantage as much. I have an MG ZS with a 2.5L V6 - this gets about 2-3 MPG better on its average of 28 - so it can just about justify the fuel cost on mileage but it's still expensive to run Tongue The RX-8 on the other hand I haven't tracked on normal fuel but it averages more like 17 MPG but I'm not sure if it will take advantage of the higher RON or not being a rotary engine. I guess it's possible but I still don't know as much about them as I do typical piston engines

the renesis motor has too many sensors to allow it to get near pre-ignition. my old 13b motor had 290 at the wheels and had to have super+. but once the boost got into double figures, the mpg went into singles :'(

Agreed, I reckon I save £36 a year by running the higher RON petrol and bike/cars defo runs better with it.

IMO "super" unleaded is just a con by the fuel companies to get you to pay more for something of questionable value. Any benefits would be minor if they exist at all.

Regular for me. My mad skills aren't good enough to notice any difference and if I want to clean the fuel system I go for a 10 quid can of carb cleaner.

The butterflies are still working as best I can tell Tongue Had the VIS motors out on Monday to check them over.

As for the Renesis, you are right, I've been reading some Turbo threads and that the pre-ignition has been mentioned... as the sell is going nowhere, I'm beginning to consider storing it and doing a long term turbo project with it Smile

For a weekend / leisure rider this might be a good option if done regularly (part of general service and maintenance) but for larger miles I would have thought using a fuel with cleaning agents would be more consistent with maintaining the fuel system. Granted it's not overly complicated on the likes of the Fazer I suppose...

I'll also use a bottle of STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner over 2 tanks of petrol, probably once a year, to give the carbs a spruce up.
