Ignition advancer
#1
I put an ignition advancer on my R1 a while back, and it made quite a difference  with the lower and mid range torque.

I've also got a gen 1 for work/touring, and its got the full Monty Ivans kit on it. I'm sure I read somewhere that you can't put the I/A on if your ivanised.

Has anyone out there done it, and was it worth doing?

Sure you can do it.  Works nicely, too. Smile

Ivan, though, reckons that it increases vibes and gives no power increase at peak rpm.  However, the benefits are felt much lower down the rev range, which is why so many have done it despite his reservations.

I followed this route to save a few bob on the job: http://www.yamahafz1oa.com/eskortsadvancermod.shtml

Had one on mine for years with a Ivans kit, pipercross air filter and blue flame end can. Does give much more midrange and seems to start much easier with it on.

And for the small cost I would just get one from eBay

Lord,
Grant me the WD-40 to move those things that are stuck, the Duck tape to fasten those things that are loose, And the wisdom to know the difference.

I did mine years ago (eskorts mod) with an Ivans carb kit and is great at the bottom end.
Also agree it starts so much better as well.
I ordered a second trigger wheel just in case I wanted to go back to standard but never did.  Big Grin

I've done the eskort mod this afternoon. Took me about 1/2 hour.

I'll see how it rides tomorrow morning on the way to work.8)

Hey Steve, it's now tomorrow morning, how was the ride. Any better?

It was good! Felt a little more torque in the lower/mid range. Not a huge ammount, but enough to make it worthwhile for Bugger all cost 8)

Let's see how it affects the fuel useage.

I fitted one over the winter but hadn't had a chance to try it until yesterday, I did just over 200 miles up around Tydrum, Inverary then back down Loch Lomond side. The roll on acceleration is improved, come up behind a car, wait for a gap to overtake then woosh! Quite a bit crisper than before and i remember thinking how smooth the engine is on a cruising throttle.

I got an advancer off ebay which for 14 pounds inc delivery has been the best value mod I've done on my gen 1 02 model fzs1000.  I've noticed easier starting and it seems to have made an improvement in low/med range tractability - well worth the small amount of money!  I'd recommend it.
This is as young as you're ever going to be!

The measurements are quite tiny and precise, so unless you have a vernier caliper or suchlike then I'd be very careful. It's only 0.6mm of material to be removed, but it has to be right!

Had a better ride on the way home as I wasn't carrying 1/2 ton of kit.

Erm, it's quite a bit better in the mid range tbh. It's now not just ballistic, but absolutely interstellar ballistic! Awesome mod!

Don't wanna appear dumb (!) but why do you need an extra pair of hands?

to take the bolt off which is holding the advancer you need to put the bike in top gear and have someone holding the brakes on as the bolt is tight and will move the inner chain and the bike which also goes for the same when putting the new one on,hope this helps.
