Replacing wiring loom. Fzs1000
#1
I've just finished fitting a replacement wiring loom to my 2003 Fazer. The old loom had a datatool system 3 alarm fitted, and from what I had read it looked easier to replace the whole loom than try and figure out which individual wire do what.

The only thing nagging me is would the alarm affect the ECU at all? Or would chucking the whole lot away not affect it?

I have tried rigging it up to an old battery to see if the bike powers up, but no luck as yet, buy that's probably down to the old battery I am using as it doesn't fully charge and needs replacing.

.....or have I taken on something way out of my skill zone?

The alarm should not effect the ECU unless it was fitted by an idiot.  :lol

A very drastic step to replace the loom just to remove the alarm. Bypassing is a very simple procedure, shorting 2 sets of pins. :eek

Very important, what year is you bike and what year is the loom from.
There are small number of differences in the early model and later model looms. The USA model looms are slightly different also.

Well, the alarm was the main reason for replacing it, but a lot of the other connections etc were pretty bad and I found a loom for the same year bike fairly cheaply.

What could go possibly go wrong Smile

2003 was the change year, when they went from  headlights switched on by the right handlebar switch to headlights switched by the ECU

The problem is that a 2003 year bikes may not be the same model.

I see, so that could explain the lack of action so far. I'll see what happens when I've got the new battery sorted, if it's still dead looks like I may have to source another one then.

I do have another old loom, but there are a couple of random loose black wires just hanging around, that doesn't look good to me.

The alarm affects the ECU. You need 2 shorts to make it work. Unfortunately all cables are black. Maybe to not make it too easy to bypass the alarm for a thief.
As mentioned before there was a change in 2003. The ECU checks for the headlight to work. If your ECU is before 2003 the loom doesn't matter.
For the later I'm not completely sure. Might be that the respective ECU input expects 12V to enable the ignition. Or some kind of current that drives the headlight relay.
(Sorry for german labeling)

Edit - Picture removed so we don't make it too easy for scumbags to steal things.

As long as the loom bought did not have an alarm then those connectors would be on the loom as they are part of it.

If there are black wires hanging loose then it is likely that the connectors were cut off to fit an alarm and you are left with the same situation as you had with the original loom.

What is important here is

1. Are your headlights controlled by the ECU or handlebar switch?
2. Which loom are you fitting? The later UK and EU looms have a White wire with a black tracer (white/black) which was not on the earlier looms. this wire is on the connector to the ECU the large connector to the clocks and the connector for the primary headlight relay.
The US does not have this white/ black wire as their headlight are always on.

If you can use a meter it is easy enough to trace the black wires

For your info. the ECU switches an earth via the white/black wire to power the primary headlight relay when the engine starts.

What code is on the ECU as this will also tell you what model you have

Take that picture down please. It is relly not clever to post how to bypass the alarm. Yes I know it is easy enough to find out, but there is no need to make life easier for the scumbags...

Had a quick look when I got in from work.

The ECU number is 5LV-8230540

The loom I fitted, well, most of the number on the white label has rubbed off, I can just about make out the number 20 near the end of the label.

The loom removed that had the alarm fitted, no idea, the label on that has long since gone.

Not enough light in garage to do any more in depth investigations though.

If the new loom has the white/black coloured wire then all is well if not it is the wrong loom as the ECU tells us the bike is the later 2003/2004 model.

Managed a quick connection of a fully charged battery tonight and we have life!! Big Grin

Bike is only half built at the mo so no headlights, front indicators, rad off, no petrol tank amongst other bits.

But the clocks lit up, back light worked so that's a good sign.
