a friend had a safe that had belonged to a contractor on a power station, no key and the back had checker plate welded over it. I used a pickaxe and went in through the base, the metal wasn't much thicker than car bodywork with about 75mm of fire clay between the two metal layers, took about 20 mins.
What did I find? a cash box with no cash in it and a dial gauge worth a few quid, and some time sheets. the safe went to the scrap yard no questions were asked?

Well.......it all depends on who you've got dismembered and stuffed inside really but coz i want a guess then im gonna go with it weighing..............150kg.......without anything inside.....actually no...im panicking now.......i up my guess to 180kg.Thats my final answer chris

Also gauged on the "2 if us" bluff by red which was a cheap trick coz 2 gen1 owners aint exactly much is it.

I'll take a guess at 120kg - I reckon much higher would be pushing it for two "average" people to carry

I had to cart a 95kg package up three flights of stairs with the help of the delivery driver... damn thing almost killed us and I was certainly grateful for his help

Ratner was a very reputable manufacturer of safes and this one probably dates back to the late 1920's or early 30's.  It would be described as a safe deposit box or jewelers overnight safe.

The problem is that this type of safe is not acceptable by insurers because of its obsolete design so it use is limited to confidential documents and petty cash.  To a dealer in used safes it has very little value and it would probably cost more for them to collect it than it is worth.  However, these older safes often find buyers on eBay so it is worth putting up for auction for around £150 - but be sure to state that the buyer must collect

thank you gingernutz, most helpful..........theres a simular one on the bay for £200 BIN.been on there for a few days now, not sure what to do with it but its far to good to scrap, if it ends up on ebay it will be 99p start and see what happens, at the end of the day I think its only worth what someones prepared to pay......I need to do a bit more research on the age of it so a check over later today for a model no and then an email to the makers.........75 kgs mmmmmmmm, I think its a lot more than that, I had it forked onto my truck, dont think two people will be able to lift it.......not even 2 manly gen 1 owners  :lol

Ok.some good guesses there...time for my guess, I think slimwilly is probably the closest with 175 kgs...iam going higher with a guess of  200kgs...it wouldn't surprise me if it was a bit more but 1/4 ton sounds a bit too much.....will be weighed tomorrow at work and then kept in my workshop untill I decide what to do with it....the weight will probably make the decision for me.i make prototype furniture and am a chair maker by trade, I love these coffee tables using engine blocks to support them and was hpping to do something along these lines with the safe, but for domestic furniture it does need to be able to move easily.......no real usable use as gingernutz has explained but I do like the look of it and the fact its "made in england"..... :thumbup

Can you turn it into a fancy post box for your house Red?........or maybe like a self locking store for the delivery men to put parcels in etc......door open and when they close it...it automatically locks.

Too bad Darrsi i've already guessed 180 & im pretty greedy........i might share the prize depending on what it is.


My theory was that it cant be 100kg or less because people can squat that and just pinch it.......albeit i wouldnt be escaping very quickly.......a tonne would become uneconomical............&'the physical size would need to be massive.......so as a compromise of all factors then i came up with 180kg..........50kg for each side section, 20kg each for the front back top and bottoms...........180kg. 8)

It's meant to be a dead weight, so it would never be light, it wouldn't be designed for one person to just walk away with although some of the shit i lift at work wouldn't be far off it, we could still be completely way off though.
I'll raise you to 220kg.
