Hi all,
Picking up a 2003 fazer thou on tuesday. As per advice on here i listened out for the noise an exup makes when ignition is switched on but couldn't hear anything. I also waited and kept an eye on rev counter but it never moved. How noticable is the noise (maybe like an old powervalve ?). Dealer has promised to service the valve but I don't want to be fobbed off when I collect it. How much difference to the feel of the engine does the exup make? Last yamaha I had was an f2 powervalve!
Cheers, Graham.
Think you will find its the exup solenoid that makes a whirring sound-its positioned under front of fuel tank. however sound of this may be masked by electric fuel pump.
The exup valve itself is often neglected as it doesnt even feature in the routine service schedule. Hopefully the cover bolts undo without difficulty-they are best replaced with stainless steel ones. The service procedure is well explained elsewhere on the forum.
And yes the valve does affect performance. Let us know how you get on. Good luck.
Cheers Dave. Never ridden a fazer before so didn't know what to expect performance wise obviously a lot gruntier than a cbr 600. Will have a look at service document.
Thanks Falcon,
That website is full of clear information. Will make good use of it.

Listening for the EXUP servo operating
1. If the Engine is stopped using the kill switch, when the engine stops you will hear the servo return the valve to the default position.
2. If the engine is stopped using the ignition key you will hear the servo returning the valve to the default position when the ignition is switched on, however as previously mentioned the sound may be masked by the ticking of the fuel pump.
Best way to listen to it is start the bike, leave it tick over and then hit the kill switch. Sounds like a whirr at the front of the tank.
it might be worth taking an allen key (think its 3 or 4 mm)and taking the cover off , if the bolts are seized solid , its a fair bet its not been serviced .
I occasionally hear a noise from the exup motor, my fuel pump rarely makes a noise unless the fuel pipes or carbs are empty.
Mine is quite noisy, it makes quite a clang at low speeds it can be felt through the footrests, checked it recently and everything is free and no tacho code issue. seems to be working normally
I don't remember this noise in the first season of ownership though.
I hear the motor as I turn the ignition on, and my last 2 exup's have squeaked too, even though they're greased!
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!
Mine always 'squeeks' when I turn it on and it's well copper greased.
Save the planet...It's the only one with beer!
Collected bike this morning and exup's been serviced and all's good. Already taken db killer out of can. Gonna have a play with suspension at the weekend. The only thing is, first bloody rain for weeks!

Yeah, I keep mine lubed but still get a little chirp when I turn the key. Kind of comforting in a way cos you know it's moving!
