siezed rear caliper
#1
Hi,
Came to service the brakes this last weekend to find front fine, but back was siezed up.

It looks like this winters salt and brake dust has blocked the bottom of the caliper around the retaining spring and the pads have sat ina bath of water. The salt has then pushed the dust seal out as I can see bits of rubber around each piston.
The good news is they push out under hydraulic presure the bad news is at the moment they don't go back under finger pressure.
I am going to do the full works and remove pistons and clean out all the crud and replace with new seals.
Do I crack in half the caliper is this looks to be the quickest way to clean everythink up, better access inside.
Does our rear caliper have the little rubber O-ring that joins brake fluid gallery between the two pieces of the caliper. Or do we have a gasket!

Cheers,

It's an o-ring seal between the caliper body halves.  Powerhouse Automotive in Sheffield powerhouseautomotive.co.uk does a seal kit including the seals http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/151066754467?nav=SEARCH

it's a little rubber ring between the halves. I just reused mine and it's been fine. it doesn't wear out like the ones that have the pistons rubbing on them but if you can find one then might as well change it.

splitting the caliper certainly makes it easier to clean out.

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

How does the rear caliper split?  I need to do mine again and splitting would definitely make things easier

they split pretty easily, as above just 2 bolts, personally id be looking for a fzs 1000 caliper now, i cleaned mine and it made hardly any difference.

if yours is completely dead i have a 600 caliper that does work could use a clean has 1 broken bleed nipple but dosent affect use as they have 2.
