Tracking System
#1
Just a quick enquiry about something I want but so much to choose from decided to see if anyone else had any ideas or used something similar.

I basically want something that tracks and logs my journeys so GPS based and so far looked at GPS tracking systems and some iPhone apps. I found that most of the units can be used from anything from tracking your cat to a vehicle but they all use sim cards so cost money, although that is only when you phone them for a live update on location mainly. As for the iPhone apps there did seem to be a few to choose from but then I don't want to end up with one that flattens the battery all the time.

Did see one for a bicycle which seemed fairly good.

Basically just need something that uses something like a memory card and logs the time, date and route that I can download to my computer so there is a record of where the bike has been at any given time.

Any suggestions?

Have a look at the real rider app. Can record all your journeys, as well as all the crash benefits. Think it's a one off cost

Thanks for that Rich, just had a look at the app on the phone and it's free with in app purchase which is Real Safe in case of an accident that's connected to the ambulance service and £25 a year subscription for that part which isn't much if your laid on the road in the middle of no where.

It's interesting as Get Geared as selling the app for £4.99 claiming that covers a one off fee for activating the Real Safe feature. Checking the Real Rider website it does cost the £25 so not sure where they got £4.99 for lifetime.

Hehe, I've just realised, if you Google real rider (on a pc) on the picture you get on the right hand side of the page, there's a picture of me!

I don't have any personal connection with real rider, although I do know the guys and girls (Andrew and Zoe) that own it, and they have been very good to us in the blood bikes.

I think 4.99 was the cost for the previous version (replaced in November 2013), so get geared are well out of date!

Any app is going to zap your battery due to using the gps, not a problem if you have a charger connected to the bike.
I have the mcn app on the iPhone and it is very detailed- Map route, average speed, top speed and positive/ negative g forces.
Some say...

I've tried this on my Motorola Moto-G, but it seems to have a lot of problems if you're riding in areas where there isn't a good mobile phone signal as it uses that to help track your route and when it lost the signal it reset my location to 0h 0'0", 0h 0'0" ie off the African coast!

Hmm, I haven't had any bother of that sort, Grahamm. I wonder if its a device specific issue (I know app developers have a nightmare with the myriad of devices out there, especially on Android - is yours an android device?). I'll mention it to Andrew next time I see him...

I don't get it. Why would you want to keep a log of where you go?

I've been out riding on my own (or in a group) and gone down a nice bit of road and thought "I'd like to ride this road again".

Rather than trying to remember where it is or find it again on a map, if you have a phone or sat nav that records your route, it's a simple matter to look it up.

Thanks for the replies, some where quite interesting and amusing lol

Oh it's a very complicated situation His Dudeness, decided not to bother tracking my every movement anyway now although still like the idea of Real Rider as I am often on long unlit roads where badgers and foxes are out to get me lol

I am going to fit something for charging though as at the moment I just use a emergency travel charger the size of a matchbox which gives you about 50% charge on the iPhone.
