Bike died just as I arrived at work (engine trouble warning light)
#1
My 2008 FZ1 Fazer died just as I arrived at work. I noticed the orange light came on (looked that up, "engine trouble warning light" - erk!!!) and then 15 or seconds later, the console went blank and the engine died some seconds later.

Doesn't sound like good news. Off to find a PDF owner's manual...

The orange engine trouble light comes on when you switch the bike on (with all the other lights) but then remains on.

Oil and fuel are ok.

Just talked with a dealer in Fulham (http://www.yamahaservicecentre.co.uk) who will pick the bike up.

After talking for a few minutes he's thinking it may be the generator (worst case cost incl labour around £850).

There are no error codes displayed, just a bike that died and an orange light that stays on.

Seems odd. If the lights are coming on with the ignition, there is battery power. If the generator failed, then I would expect it to run until the battery ran flat.
Sounds more like an ECU fault. possibly just a bad connection.

There was a fault code of 46, but coincidentally my trip mileage was reading 46 at the time the bike died so that detail got lost on me. Doh!

Bike was picked up last night and the dealer verified it was the generator.

Having a few bits done at the same time: new rear shock as it's done its time now, just a Yamaha OEM one though, new chain and sprockets, new throttle cable, new fork oil, and possibly a new can. The dealer uses Beowulf so I'm going to look at those and ask here about any Beowulf recommendations for an FZ1.

Given this expense, I'll be hanging onto the FZ1 for a few more years before considering anything new. Seems to be quite a lot happening bike-wise these days (especially nakeds). I still lust after a Speed Triple.
