Top box key end stuck in the bottom of the lock barrel, any ideas?

Its a big Kappa box but the keys look the same as the givi ones. I cant get in with tweezers, have you got one out before, how?

Ive never done anything like this before.

But im guessing the key & barrel are different metals so couldnt you get something to cool down the area & make it contract & then pull it out easier???

Just throwing it out there, prob a stupid idea Smile

I had the same problem on a Givi box where the key snapped off in the lock. Tried tweezers without success then as last resort put a tiny spot of superglue on the end of the broken key and carefully pushed against the broken bit within the lock. Gave it 30 seconds or so to bond and withdrew the key carefully. Worked a treat.

I suppose the worst case scenario is drilling the lock bit out, but with doing that you could then look for a matching key/barrel set to match your other locks? Probably not the best idea but could offer an alternative solution to the bigger problem!

Try local locksmith, had the same with a fuel cap, they use a "backwards"corkscrew, wind it into the barrel along side the key and it winds the stub out. Not much help on a Sunday tho.

MAGNET should do it - thats what I have done before

And while on the subject of broken keys.

I now always remove the key from my seat lock once opened
Because I had it on the side stand and then put it on the centre stand and bent the key on my thigh as the bike went back
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

You've not stated if the box is now locked closed or is open!?
If it's open just buy a new lock and key set off eBay.
If it's closed glue the key into the lock and open it, still resulting in purchasing a new lock and key set off eBay!

if it opens and locks with the bit left, then leave it as it is for now?

Adam, take the bracket off the end of the barrel assembly and push the lock barrel out, it should work that way, you ll see all the lock pegs which might release or at least you can lube it and push the key out from the bracket end of the lock with a small screwdriver  Smile

Since the box is open, remove the barrell and replace it. It is only held in with a clip. Loads of them on ebay for a tenner

Not sure about the Givi but most have a hole at the rear of the lock and you can push the key out.
