Modifying side gate
#1
Looking for advice on a lock for the side gate if anyone has any experience.

I'd like something secure but the one feature I want from it is to be able to lock & unlock it from inside and outside so I can bring the bike in and out easily.

I've been doing a lot of searching and found two locks designed for the purpose:

Double Cylinder Gate Lock
or
Lokk Latch Deluxe

But neither of those seem to be available locally. I'm not against ordering online but was hoping to see it in the flesh before buying.

I almost bought this rimlock in woodies earlier, including handles it would run in the region of €35 but I wasn't convinced it would be the securest of options. The lock part of it being very small.

As it is a side gate it is not very thick so anything that would need to be seated inside the door would not suit.

Anyone got any recommendations or experience with this? Thanks

no epxerience, but that first one you posted looks ok. Bear in mind though, that if the gate is thin like you say, there isn't much for the screws to bite into (before they're poking out the other side), so you want an option that uses a few screws, and it will still likely be easy to kick the gate open anyway (and rip the screws out), so an expensive lock aint worth it.

why not add a piece of wood to beef up the gate where the lock will go, and then fit a lock into the beefed up piece of gate?

That style of lock, you need the key to open and close it from both sides.
If this is ok then that is a good type of lock for a gate.
Have a look for an Azbe gate lock, they are good and you can replace the cylinder if you need to change the keys.
However, if you don't want the agro of having to use a key from the inside every time, how about a digital keypad type lock?
Always free exit from the inside and no keys to faff about with from outside. You may have to put some extra wood in to widen the fixing point and you can pick one up for around £30.

Thanks for the replies guys - both of those options look like a runner, I seen the one from PJB on Amazon alright but from a crowd with little history (was a few £ cheaper though).

The Azbe lock looks to be a bit bulkier and may be better because of it. Here is where it will be going:

I'm looking at replacing/refitting the gate posts first of all because they have come a bit loose so I could have some extra options in fitting a lock by adding some more wood to the back of the gate.

It needs to be lockable from both sides, can't have someone jumping the wall and just opening it from the inside. I'll probably add some sort of drop anchor and leave a bolt or two on the gate in addition so that it is more secure when the bike is behind the gate.

Once the bike is away from the house I don't care who is down there or what they do  :lol

I reckon the azbe will fit nicely where the existing bolt is. You could move that to the top of the gate and maybe add another at the bottom.

The locks only as good as the gate, and the hinges you put it on.
Make sure all screw heads ( including Hinges)  are covered or damaged so that they can't be unscrewed. I've seen some great security measures on gates on the opening side, but the hinges are easily unscrewed or even the gate can be lifted off then lol
