i would say no. the detail around the eyeballs are too real to be a painting.

Perhaps it is done in reverse,,start altering a photo and more and more until you destroy it, then rewind it.

It seems more akin to producing an image from pixels as with a digital camera to me, but building it up in stages rather than in one snap of the shutter.
It looks quite clever, but it is not art.

Hit the nail on the head there Nick. I'd call it photo realism using coloured pixels instead of paint. And it could be done on an iPad I suspect, or at least you could do it using something like Photoshop. And it probably would take 200 hrs. That's and eight hour working day for 25 days.

In the old days before computer you'd pay someone called a finished artist do that sort of work.

The Artist that did that paid a lot of attention to shadow and detail to get to that photo realistic level.

For instance this airbrush painting below took 40 hours to complete. If a further 160 hours was spent on the fine detail it would look more like a photo. That's a lot of time and effort if you can just take a photo. But would there be the same sense of achievement?

Art is more about the artist expressing his/herself, rather than trying to produce an exact replica of the subject. The end result of this ipad thing allows no room for the "artist" to express his own mood/feeling about the subject. Assuming Morgan Freeman didn't sit for the ipad operator live in a studio, this is just a facsimile of a photo, and if he did, it's just producing a photo by other means.

He has just used a modern canvas and modern techniques to highlight his very good technical ability.  Life like paintings are his "thing", he just used an iPad instead of paint.  Good on him.

I agree. There is no expression in the work. It is done by an artist but he's created an image that is a 'photo copy' warts-n-all, and I don't mean in the sense that it's produced by a photocopying machine.

Looking at the techniques used I'd say the artist has a good grounding in painting.

Here's some of his other works.

I like seeing people creating life like paintings, in the same way I take pleasure in seeing technicians create prosthesis for people with facial deformities.  Both art forms trying to mimic reality as close as possible.

I think there is Art and then there is craftsmanship. Art is some original that grabs you by it originality and message. To do an image in this day and age as good as a photo is great Craftsmanship in my mind.

As for doing that on a computer screen you could use the pixels in the way you would draw a grid over a picture you were going to copy in the old days.

Still I will get back to my box of crayons  :lol

Hmmmm, it definitely gives food for thought. If you look at a professional photographer's work, you would rarely be able to see the view they had captured live for yourself in the same way. The photographer might use clever or artificial lighting, play with shutter speeds, pose his/her subject carefully etc. But if you or I saw the subject on any given day in the flesh, he/she/it would not look the same as the photographer's results. In that sense, photographers express themselves as artists. But clearly, the ipad operator did not have Morgan Freeman pose for 200 hours (even in sessions, as Kosmic said, that'd be something like 25 long working days, or many more shorter ones and I don't see anyone wanting to go through that as a subject!). So presumably, he worked from a photo. But then I would say that the original photo is the art in all this, and it may be that the ipad operator took that photo. In which case, the art, in my view, lies in the original photo, and not in the ipad copy.
Don't get me wrong Hamos, he's obviously a very talented individual, and as Kosmic's links show, a very talented artist. I just don't believe that the ipad production is, of itself, art, although it has validity in other senses.

Keep working on the Holly Willoughby project Kosmic - in this case, I couldn't give a f**k about art!  :lol

Is a pencil drawing I don't see why the other picture on the ipad wouldn't be possible!
