problems after a lay up!

Hi all. I have had my 2002 fazer layed up for about 18 months, due to a spine op and recovery. It is having real problems starting and cuts out when i come to a stop. It is also running on 3 cylinders. I'm pretty sure the main issue is the carbs all bunged up and it is going in the garage to be done on tuesday to have them done. Any other things i need to be checking? Thanks

Did it have petrol in the tank? I would check the tank for rust also..

The tank is fine, there was fuel in it. All fresh fuel in it now too :\

Sounds like carbs to me mate. I would get them ultrasonically cleaned if I were you. If you are any good with the spanners whip the carbs out send then off to get cleaned then stick em back job done. How do you no its running on 3 cylinders?

I've got a 2001 fazer which I hardly ever use.


It's done 700 miles from new. 


I left it for several years and the carbs got blocked up.


I had two problems with them:
1) Float needle valve wouldn't close properly
2) Pilot jets blocked up.


Had to take the carbs off and clean them out.


Now I run it once a month and have put some Redex in the tank.


The FZS which I use regularly has done 70,000 miles and the carbs have never got blocked up.


My conclusion is they don't like being stood for a long period of time.


I had one other problem leaving the new one stood.


I've had two plug failures.
God knows why.
But I've had to replace two plugs over the last ten years.


On the one I ride regularly I've never had a plug failure.

Anything that's used regularly is going to run better than a low mileage bike that's just stood and never used, engines are made to work!!

The carbs are being stripped and cleaned tomorrow. I'm going to get a new set of plugs for it too. The bike was only laid up as I explained due to my back issue. I now have a nice tatanium frame in my spine and am ready to ride again. Beleive me, it won't have that kind of lay up again! Oh and i know it's running on 3 cylinders as it doesn't sound like a 4 cylinder at the moment!  :lol

Well, just a little update for you. The garage did an excellent job. Stripped the carbs and cleaned them, balanced the carbs, put in 4 new plugs and added fual addative. Think it was wurth?! But this stuff is suppossed to be the dogs danglies for cleaning the fuel system. Lots better than redex etc. Anyway, the bike now revs so freely it feels better than new. Big shout out to PGH in devon.
