Front Sprocket Nut

I joined the Forum when I was searching for an answer for my bike missing. Thanks to the folk on the site I found that my plug caps were braking down. Replaced and bike is running sweet again. Looking through the site I noticed that the front sprocket nut can be an issue. My bike has only done 3600 miles but it is 10 years old. Before I take the cover off can somebody tell me what I'm looking for. Even better does somebody have a picture of a before and after sprocket nut replacement.

Sorry, that didn't appear to work as i intended  :rolleyes
Do a 'search' above and just put the words 'front sprocket nut' in and you'll get everyone's woes and thoughts all at once.

Soapy if you take a look at my recent thread about cleaning my chain you'll see a pic with my uprated nut fitted, notice it is pretty much flush with the shaft rather than lots of shaft threads showing with the original nut.

If you get down low and shine a torch up the inside of the chain, you can actually see the sprocket nut (and shaft if it's the thin nut) without taking the cover off.

If there is a problem with the nut and it's not tight, consider this:
 
I reckon the reason why the problem with the front sprocket nut exists is as follows:
 
Minor play between the sprocket and shaft, due to shaft or sprocket being machined out of tolerance.
Nut tightened up on the sprocket.
Sprocket moves fractionally back and forward, and because the nut is tight to it, so does the nut.
Nut threads wear out as do the shaft threads.
 
Possible solution:  Grind down the over-lap of the nut so it tightens up on the shaft and not on the sprocket.
In essence it should be flush with the sprocket but not tightening up against it.
Ideally make sure there's a layer of grease between nut / security washer / sprocket.

I've heard or someone doing similar, except he put the nut on back to front so there was no overlap and had a thick washer (plastic?) between the nut and sprocket.

I can see that this nut can cause a bit of paranoia & i must say i was relieved to see that my new nut was still on when i recently took off the front cover but i think spending the few quid & sticking on the new nut is good enough a fix, i dont recall anyone saying that their uprated nut had come off & stripped the threads & lets remember this new nut is manufactured by yamaha & not some aftermarket part & if it still didnt fix the problem yamaha would be in a world of shit.
