Seems pretty obvious really ! I recently got a 98 FZS600, ordered my service kit, got bike on stand in garage, so far so good, its got after market stainless down pipes, not enough room to get filter out !! do I really have to remove downpipes to get filter out ? I hope not cuz the manifold studs are rustier than a rusty thing , any advice would be very welcome, thanks, Fraser

Get one of these & attach to a ratchet to save yourself stabbing it repeatedly with a screwdriver, useful as a long-term labour saver

I've already got one of those, getting the filter undone is not the problem, its how to get the filter out through a gap that is too small LOL

hmm, with normal downpipes you definitely don't have to remove them to remove the oil filter... so sounds like you might have to drop the pipes due to poor design! Is the new filter the same size?
There are some aftermarket pipes that don't allow the oil filter to come off - piss poor design. My mate at work bought a Fazer with some stainless downpipes and found he had to remove them to get the oil filter off. He's changed the pipes now.
Thanks for all the replys, it looks like a poor design, I'm going to try to undo the front engine mount cradle to see if that will give me a bit more room, I've got the correct (small) filter, fingers crossed ,

Or undo the exhaust can bolt, and (carefully!) allow the exhaust system to flex down. Might give the room you need.
Uh oh, do sandybikespares downpipes suffer from this?
Must be poorly build downpipes, i've got aftermarket delvick exhaust and downpipes attached to my Fazer and removing the Oil Filter is not a problem in the slightest. close but not a problem with both hands.
Yeah i don't have any trouble at all with space when fitting/removing my filters?
