Spark plugs

For the first time since I've had the bike, I took a peek at the spark plugs. And foc me, they're in a bad way. I only checked plug 1, but skinned my knuckles badly when doing so, and had a fight getting it out. Plug 3 also had rust marks on the bottom - gonna be painful removing that.

What plugs do you use, are the expensive ones worth it, and how much should I expect to pay for new ones?

Stick with the ngk's, personally I always smother the threads toward the centre of the plug in a big dollop of grease along with the plug caps as I've had problems with cap failures in heavy rain on these fazers before now!
I'm out of touch with price but does £9 a plug sound about right?

I would change them if they are like the one in the picture.
I agree with Punkstig , stick with the NGK, I have very rarely seen them fail.
I usually use CR8EIXs  as I feel the engine runs smoother with them and are about £25 to 30 for 4 on ebay, but the standard CR8E are fine and are about £15 to £20 on ebay.

The one in the pic is the one in cylinder 1 which I pulled out earlier. The CR8EIXs sound good - I'm on a tight budget, and need to change tyres soon too. Not good, it's beans for a month again then...

Be careful as I had the same looking plugs and # 3 was looking very rusty. First attempt at getting it out and it broke clean off leaving the threads still in the head  :'(
Managed to get it drilled out and helicoiled in situ after about 6 hours but still quicker and cheaper than head off.

Ooh er. I'll have to take it easy on that front then, thanks for the warning. Were you using the toolkit-provided spark whench doodah?

Spray a shit load of wd40 (or whatever your preference of penetrating oil) round the plugs every night for a few nights!

Not a chance top quality Teng Tools only  Big Grin
You can't even soak it with plus gas or the likes as the plugs have a seal washer but worth an over night try  :rolleyes

NGK are routinely coppied in Serbia - you pay a lot for perhaps not the original quality.

OKO sparsk are half the price, very, very good!

Do be careful when removing them - I've had one snap before. Thankfully it was on cylinder 1 in my old engine and was able to have it helicoiled without removing anything and was damn cheap as well (I love Bristol, sooo much cheaper).

I managed to replace 1 and 4 on my current bike and they were in a bad shape (worse than your photo Christo). I don't want to chance 2 + 3 so they are staying put until the engine comes out and gets replaced (hopefully this year?)

thats not good CHRISTO...shame on you  :o :o :o :o .....dont use the bike tool kit,use a quality spark plug socket making sure you hold the wrench square,nice steady pressure dont force it,as said a bit of wd etc might help  Wink

Funnily enough I use the Fazer tool kit to get mine in and out, easy peasy!

Also, I squirt a load of WD 40 or GT 85 or whatever else I have lying around (old engine oil works a treat) round the threads  before putting them back in.

Last time I bought plugs I got a set of Iridium's for £5.60 each off the net, not for the extra performance (what extra performance?!) but for the life span of the plug, which is good.

Laziness on my part, I'm ashamed to say. They probably hadn't been out in donkeys when I bought it, and I could never be bothered to check them (too fiddly, and skinned my knuckles too much). Time to pay the price...  :o
