A2 licence bike bhp GS500 2001

My nephew has just past his test. Wahoo 

He now has a A2 licence so is restricted to < 35KW or restricting a <70KW bike

A few questions

How do you know  what the official BHP of a bike is.

cos 2 bikes I'm getting confused about are a SUZUKI GS 500 2001 and the MK1 fazer

The fazer is 70KW (maybe depends where i look)

The GS 500 I'm not sure I know some are ok and some are not

So Can he ride a restricted MK1 fazer
and does he need to restrict a 2001 GS500

GS500 unrestricted is fine but the Fazer is only on the full "A" list, even restricted it doesn't feature on the A2 section.

Well at least he didn't try to play you and sell you a kit regardless, that's worth some points in my book

But as far as I'm aware the Fazer is out of reach unfortunately as its just too powerful under the new licence schemes

The problem with the new rules is you cannot restrict anything down to 35kw now. You can only restrict down from less than 70kw. The FZS600 is between 95bhp and 99bhp dependant on where you look. Unfortunately, even 95bhp equates to just over 35kw so out of the game now for new riders until they go derestricted.

How old is your nephew Zarni? If he is over 24 he could have gone straight for the fully derestricted licence. I am guessing he is not, but is over 21. Fortunately my eldest passed his test in August at 17 so he gets to go fully derestricted in 18 months time whilst he is only 19. New riders now can't get there till they are 21 at the earliest.

So the Fazer at 95 bhp = 70.8kW - literally just over the threshold

IIRC, the old test rules stated that the bike being ridden for the A2 test had to exceed the 35kW hence the values to get bikes into the category where schools would buy them.
