Hi Chris - Program was general detective stuff, good but not great. Yes most of the road shots seemed to be done on one stretch, which looked like it was meant to be on one of the outlying islands. A bit different to the M25 down near me ! Looking at the map, some of the long stretches of road look delicious. Tried the beers a few times while in Edinburgh. Yes a visit to Shetland is definitely on my list.
Hey,
I watched the program too, it was a bit sureal seeing all the places etc. I liked it, thought it wasn't bad for a first episode. Although it was supposed to have been set in bressay most of the filming was actually done in whiteness just over the hill from where I live and a lot of the roads the showed were down at the south end of the island.
The thing is that some of the roads here are great and are always nice to ride along but after you've had a bike and been out for a few runs then you've covered most of the roads and it does get a bit boring riding the same roads all the time.
You should definately come up some time, it is beautiful. PM me if you do and I can show you about some nice places that the guide books don't tell you. That goes for anyone else reading this too. 8)
Anyway, back on topic and more to the point back on nightshift... Tonight is dragging much more than last night. be glad to get home in the morning!

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.
Continuing with the original topic, I am a programmer and work from home. The major advantage is that my boss really doesn't mind too much as to what hours I work, as long as I actually work and meet deadlines. I am essentially "on call" 7 days a week and am very flexible around hours (have worked 8am - 2am before now) and in return I get to sleep in pretty much every morning
The last few days has marked the release of two major games for me though, which has made me nocturnal... staying up till 7 - 8am then sleeping for 4~ hours and back to grinding away - this is what sparked my Gamers thread, my friends and family think I'm crazy but I find their interesting in football and rugby equally baffling. Currently enjoying the MLG StarCraft II Winter Championships
Cool,
Nice to have such a flexable job. Although demanding of your time when you are busy at least you are doing something you enjoy 8)

Yeah, it's awesome with things being so flexible - really love this aspect after working a standard retail job.
Doing something I enjoy... you mean gaming whilst I'm supposed to be working right? :lol
Right. haha!
Me and my dad used to spend hours playing battlefield2 online together. Love that game.
This is me: http://www.bf2stats.net/player/131438482/ All my map scores have vanished because it's so long since I was online but you get the general idea.
and this is my dad: http://www.bf2stats.net/player/128989335/ Ranked 335 in the world for aviator, safe to say he's pretty damn good in a jet! haha!
Probably best that I don't play it while I'm at work though or the old people might think the war is back on... :eek

I never really got in to the Battlefield series until Battlefield 3 and its safe to say that I am a terrible pilot haha

Well you can see how many hours he's logged and mine too but we used to practice together on our own server which didn't log any hours kills etc for hours and hours. I'm probably about the 1000 hours mark in total and he's more like 3k... sad I know but was good fun 8)
I'm not a bad pilot, he says modestly, but I was pretty vicious in the helicopters. Practice etc etc etc... haha

Nice, I haven't quite logged that many hours on BF3 just yet I used to use Xfire to track stats (and still do) but have recently taken to using Raptr as it pulls in information from both Xfire and Steam and has more stats information (I love stats )

WOW! That's serious amount of stats! haha!

The impressive / scary part is that the tracking began in 2006 (as shown on Xfire) and since then I have averaged at least 2 hours of gaming every single day for the past 7 years... I should note that these stats are not padded - I've seen people just leave a game on constantly to get their hours recorded which makes absolutely no sense to me what-so-ever. If anything, there is probably time missing...
Should probably stop hijacking this thread :lol :hijack
Ye stat padding seems so stupid. Never taken part myself either.
That is a lot of hours my friend, I've probably spent a similar average of hours detailing cars/bikes since I was about 17 so I can't really comment.. haha

Not a gamer myself so cannot contribute to hijack, sorry!
But to get back to the OT, I am a paramedic currently on third night of four, and it's been BUSY!!! I'm on here now trying not to fall asleep for the last 2 hours of the shift, or before the next job comes in, which ever is soonest...
Chris, I have a lot of contact with your people in this part of the world, usually a nice polite lot . How does it work in Shetland with ambulances and suchlike? Is there anything on the island, or do they get flown in? I guess people in your area are a lot more self-reliant than here; only last night we had someone call us because he had a head cold and blocked sinuses and said he couldn't breathe. Which he could. And someone else who had seen doctors and consultants and surgeons and hadn't been made better, so called us because he wanted an injection to cure him :rolleyes .
Anyhow, mustn't grumble :lol . Do you find on a night shift that sometimes it will go really quickly even though you may not be very busy? And other times it can go on for what seems like days even if theres a lot going on?
There are people who can eat all the time, people who can have sex anytime, and people who can sleep anytime. I'm one of those - anytime, anywhere. Literally. If I have a 15 minute break and I'm sleepy - no problem, I sleep.
Still I hate night shifts - no amount of money can compensate for it. I'm all broken and need several days to go back to normal. Even if I sleep well, I can't function good (it is mostly apparent if I try to play football the next day, no dribbling, slower reflexes etc). I need sleep from 24:00 to 4:00 to work well.
I believe 6 hours of hard work are more than enough, people need private lives and spare time. Capitalists draining people, louring them into working too much for buying things they don't really need... but that's a different topic.
Most things done in a hurry need to be done again - patiently.
As far as sleeping patterns go I tend to be able to sleep mostly on cue but not if I'm not tired enough or if something is on my mind (be it good or bad). But I can stay up all night, sleep during the day, sleep for 3 hours, sleep for 15 hours etc etc... I do usually have a standard pattern of around 01:00 - 10:00 but lately its been more like 08:00-12:00
I only manage 4-5 hours sleep after a night shift, and by the time I've done a set of 4 I'm almost like a zombie, and It takes days to recover.
I'm up at this time because I have an early shift to go to. Start at 6am after a 40 minute ride to work, looking at a 7.30pm finish then the return journey home. A rare bit of an o/t moment that doesn't happen too often!

Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!
Have a good day, Stevierst
I'm on the home stretch, last one of four. I usually sleep pretty well during the day, but still feel wrecked at about 2am to about 5am especially the first night. I recover well though, for which I am eternally grateful.
I usually don't have a problem sleeping, especially after a nightshift. In fact I used to have real trouble getting to sleep but since I moved onto nights it's been my best sleep in years! Haha.
Before my first night then I have a long lie in the morning instead of having a nap in the afternoon as a sleep in the afternoon makes me feel hellish. After my nightshift I get home between quarter past and half past 8, if I am working that night then I'll try and sleep from whenever I get home till 4 (usually only sleep till about half 2 or 3 though) and If I'm not working that night then I make myself get up at one or two at the very latest then do something like have a game of squash or go to the gym to really tire myself out so I can get a normal time sleep that night and kick my body clock back into a normal routine which is about midnight or 1 till 8 or 9.
I'm off now until next monday though! Woop!

I did night shift for 2 years on an IT Helpdesk on a rota of 3 on/3 off; 1 day and 2 nights, and the constant flipping of my sleep pattern eventually destroyed me. It was a good laugh while it lasted and as it was usually very quiet I spent my nights watching films or playing games on my laptop. Still, I much prefer the regular 9-5, I feel more awake and I get to spend more time with my daughter/family. Also not being on the phones now is a breath of fresh air.

Im working nights for a security company. I decided that im to old and fat to do a job where you have to wear a stab vest (youve seen them running in and out or banks with a big box thing) so now i work in the vaults. Theres pros and cons to working nights but at the moment im to knackered to remember the pros. Still its a job and the pays ok so i should dry my eyes and remember summer and dry salt free roads cant be far away eh.
