Hi- I need to replace my chain and sprockets on my bog standard 2002  Gen1 fazer 1000.  I don't ride hard ( but don't ride like a vicar either !) - so what x-ring do people suggest for best quality/ best value - I don't need the heaviest super duty race chain, just something that is better than o.e.m. spec- perhaps something like a DID 530 VXGB or an EK x-ring chain.??  I have read somewhere that it is always advisable to use a new Yamaha front sprocket, as other makes make more noise- is this true?  The Yam sprockets cost much more than say a Sunstar or JT sprocket - I see chain/sprocket packages that are very reasonable which use cheaper front sprockets, I just wonder if it is false economy and I would be better to go for the Yam front sprocket, and buy the chain and rear sprocket all separately - advice please, Cheers! The OE chain is DID ZVM.

Most of the chain and sprocket sets on e-bay etc use lower spec chains.

OE sprocket has a big nylon damper that helps reduce transmission noise.  I fitted ZVM chain and renthal sprockets, and yes there was quite an increase in noise.

If you use the search function, you should find endless (ha ha ha) stuff on chain and sprockets.

And fit a chain oiler! Honestly, its a no brainer.
Your chain lasts twice as long, with half as many adjustments needed, and much less cleaning needed (once its set up correctly)

I remember when I sold my 98 R1 it still had the same OEM chain on at over 17,000miles  :eek

If I ever need to replace the chain on my FZ1 I most likely go for the OEM Yamaha one

You'll pay a fortune for the OEM endless chain.

Not that DID ZVM is cheap anyway, but there will still be a major saving in fitting the after market soft rivet job. 
I chanced my chain at 17,00 miles.  I was tempted just to fit a new front sprocket (which was totally shagged) as chain and rear sprocket where both in excellent condition.

I've had only 3 OEM chains in 100,000 miles. I use a Scottoiler, but 35k per chain is pretty good. I reckon the Fazer OEM chains are well worth it. And pulling the swingarm out to put one on only takes an hour. Very easy job.
Scottoilers can be messy, but you never get a tight spot with one and with the touring reservoir, you just never have to think about chains. My current chain's done well over 30k and it's fine.
