Fuel gauge accuracy

Hi all


When I fill up fuel (to the bottom of the filler neck) my gauge will read over full for about 25-30 miles, then slowly read down to about 3/4 until it reaches about 120 miles, then it plummets tto the last quarter and then the last 50 miles reads correctly.


Is this a fazer thing or is my sender faulty?

Fuel Gauge Accuracy - It's not exactly accurate, but more or less an indication of "Yes, I have fuel" or "No, I'm gonna crap out on you soon Big Grin"

After about 10L usage mine nudges the half way mark. About right IMO.


When I had a Divvy 9 it was brimming till after 100 miles then it dropped like a stone but that's another story.


Fuel gauges are a relatively new experience for me, I used to have a fuel tap with a reserve position which was great as long as you turned it back off reserve when you filled it up again. Oh. how I used to laugh!! (ha ha)

Yes I remember that - going onto reserve as you were going round a corner riding 'progressively' was a novel experience the first time, as was shaking the bike with your knees to eek out a few more metres as you realise you were on reserve the whole time... Lol

I fill mine up every day.  60 miles and it's not moved.  Another 60 miles and it's indicating 3/4 full.  It then takes 10 litres to fill the 20 litre tank  :look

I think it's just about getting used to it, bike tanks being a funny shape and all,,,,,

You have a multigauge don't you Alex?
Might be worth asking Christian if he could modify the response profile to compensate for the non-linearity of the sender.

Little test I did a while back on a 2001 Fzs600. (I must have had more time to spare back then  :rolleyes )
From completely empty tank and bike stationary on level ground.
1.5 litres in tank before fuel flows from tap.
Further 2.3 litres for sender to register a change.
5 litres usable fuel (i.e. in addition to the 1.5 litres) = just under 1/4 on gauge.
10 litres usable fuel = 1/2 on gauge.
15 litres usable fuel = off top of scale.
I didn't measure how much more fuel to fill but probably about 3 !/2 litres.
Another thing to note is that the gauge reading alters from going up a steep hill and coming down. By quite a lot when tank under half full.

Reminds me of my old landy. Fuel gauge was accurate for the first & last quarters, anything in between and the needle would swing wildly from 1/4 to 3/4. If you hit the white line at zero, you were out of fuel and the engine would stop instantly, none of this showing zero when you have 20 more miles in the tank crap, once it got to empty, you were done! Lol

Having said that a fuel gauge on a bike is quite a novelty to me. I'm used to reserve taps!

Sorry guys, forgot to enable notifications on this topic so didnt see the responses!

Good to know thats how its mean to be. At the end of the day, im not so bothered, as if I know the ballpark figure per tank, I can kind of guess.

I have been lots of back and forthing wtih Christian, as I cant get mine to read speed correctly. Its very odd, set the speedfactor to 1, and it reads over by quite a bit, EG, 50 miles on the trip, 70 miles on the multi gauge.

but, when I recalibrate it with a 0.717 speedfactor, it reads under! All very wierd, and he doesnt know why. I would like to hear other peoples experiences.

at the moment, I think I am going to have to make small changes until I get it right Smile

lol, I suspect you would only know if you have played around with the multigauge settings :p

Most of us don't have the multi-gauge mod and I imagine some may not have come across it at all - I only have done recently within the last week or so
