Running on 3 cylinders

I started my Gen 1 this morning and it had dropped a cylinder, I suspect a coil has failed affecting  number 2 is this a common issue on the FZ1000's any help appreciated.

A common problem is a poor connection between the HT lead and the Plug Cap.  First try some water displacing spray if you have been riding in the wet,  then try trimming the HT lead back a bit and refitting the plug cap.

There are two coils serving two cylinders each.

If you have a coil fault, you will run on two.

If there is snow are riding, it will get where water alone wont.

Sounds like a wet lead as already stated.

Ok so if a coil fails it takes out both cylinders 2 and 3 or can part of the coil fail? as in my problem only stopping number 2 firing.

i had the same prob - cylinder 1 just stopped. Got it home, booked it in to a garage... when i went to take it to the garage the next day it started fine on all cylinders; garage said they couldn't find anything wrong but changed the plugs all the same - it's been fine ever since. Pretty sure it was water/condensation related?

Had a similar problem recently on a very damp morning after not having used the bike for a couple of weeks over Xmas. Difficulty strating as only on 3 cylinders, but by the time I had got gear on ready to ride it had cured itself.

As above reckon it is just a condensation/moisture issue.

Anything is, of course, possible but I think it is highly unlikely a coil would fail on just one cylinder.

The leads, however, could be at fault.

I am still sticking with the damp plug cap etc. WD40 or a nice warming run.... That will be next week for the run then!

A set of fresh plugs is never a bad idea anyway - how many miles on the ones in there??

no need to apologise lol  if u want a speed triple my advice is go for the four cylinder. i had a recent hiccup in that i switced on bike without starting and was getting 0-7k reading so thought exup had a problem but this was after 2 weeks of awful rain with lots of humidity. i took it out and rode the bitch for about 2/3 hours way up the rev range and no more dodgy diagnostic since although i havnt done anything to the valve since i bought the bike 14 months ago with 2500 on clock on an 03 plate. it now has 7500. maintenance due i know. cold and humidity and not riding the beast + carbs = minor probs.
Just flapping about on this stagnant little pond on the outer rim of the internet.....yup....  :-))

Its been dry and hot in Perth so I doubt it would be moisture, I have dropped it at the Yamaha dealer to see what they think is the problem, low mileage 34,000 kilometers on a 2004 FZS1000S.

Obviously Perth, Australia, not the original.

My old thou dropped cyl 1 at 99,000miles
Spent a whole day at a garage, couldn't find a thing. Problem was I was on my way to Nordkapp.
On the road the bike would stutter low down, the "clear" with a surge. Made for dodge overtakes.
Back home I changed to a new coil which sorted it (for a while).

The bike shop said it was a fouled plug no 2 they put a new one in, I started up ready to ride home and running on 3 again Sad mechanic comes out changes no 1 plug and its ok, they say it is over fuelling causing the plugs to foul up. Strange how it has been ok since September. I Ivanised the bike after I bought it but am not sure what had been done by the previous owner as the main jets were not stock. It may have been on a Dyno  and maybe the Pilot jets have been changed to larger ones anyone have any experience with this issue?

My bike was ivanised by the guru Mike, nothing else was done to the engine apart from servicing.

Did they replace just the No.2 plug then? And then just the No.1? And, as asked previously, what colour were they? Might have a bearing on why mine stopped firing. Odd that they only replaced one plug tho? Why not do all?

No talk of hot, sunny weather pls - under 4cms of snow and ice here...

yes....very strange to replace just the one plug  :eek .........just finished clearing 7/8 inches of snow from the drive/road ,snow quite bad here in south bucks  Sad

If you have fuel leaking past the float seat O-ring, it can raise the fuel level to the point of causing a rich misfire.  It would also account for the fouled plug(s).

I will pull the carbs off again and replace all the parts back to stock except for Ivans kit.
I wont mention the weather again but I just returned from Laverton in Western Austrtalia on the edge of the desert 47 deg centigrade  :groan
