I thought they were supposed to fully charge the Battery and then monitor it to keep it in top condition. I could leave my Optimate on for a few days with no apparent damage to the Battery.

How old is the battery? If one or more of the cells are dying you might be able to get enough charge into it to turn the engine over once or twice, but it'll only get worse.

I think it might be the one that came with the bike so might be 7 years old ooops

Probably best to put a new one in, then.

This thread recommends MotoBatt, although I've not used them myself.

I don't jump start it in gear as it's easier on slight inclines to get up to speed then clutch in first gear let it out bang bike started haven't had the front end come up yet with all th 10 times I've done it so far ,
Batt fully charged last night showing 13.84 volts so gonna see tonite how far it's dropped:-)

at a voltage of 11.5v then your batterys on its last legs, you can recover a battery from this low voltage as long as all the plates are in good nick, but an Oximiser isn't the tool to do it,

what type of battery is it ?

If it's the old wet style  then get an old fashioned battery charger on it for a couple of hours to put a large boost into it, but don't let the battery get hot, then use the oximiser

If its a Gel style then you can still a car charger but it needs to limit its initial charge

If its a dry cell new fangled thingy then you need that type of charger to put the boost in, which the Oximiser will do but its not got enough omff in it to reverse chemical process

I've always found with these things, use them to put the charge into the battery but once its at full charge, unplug the oximiser, I'm not confinced that the top up function of these units work.

My rules for battery maintenance are simple

keep the battery physically clean
Charge when need to but not on a trickle charge

always followed the above and I've never had to replace a battery, as far as I know my old Buell  a 2000 model is still on its original battery, as was my old 1150GSA 2004 model.
