Scary discovery...!

Being that my bike is new to me, and reading stories of front sprockets wearing / undoing etc, I decided to whip the front cover off yesterday, before going out with a mate for a "quick Sunday blast" for a couple of hours.

So, off it comes.... The most accumulated amount of chain Goo I have EVER seen on any of my bikes, so bad it looks like an oil leak when you lean down..! and in the collected shit, I find, nestling below the front sprocket a 50mm long M4 caphead bolt! NICE

Sprocket looks fine, chain is decent, it did seem to have a bit of a tight spot after I bought the bike, but 100 miles+ and some chain lube have sorted it out nicely, think it was sat idle for a few months prior to me buying her.
Tab washer in place and plenty of thread showing, so I didn;t actually check for tightness, now playing on my mind...

Similar experience here.... except I found a small allen key in the gunk.  I guess the previous owner managed to drop it in there somehow.

Ha ha, at least that wouldn't end up in the chain.

I just shat myself thinking "what if..." like landing a wheelie and it had dislodged and flown into the chain run.

Anyway, at least I had a look. Bought some gunk today and some brake cleaner today, let the cleaining begin....

i had a bit of a discovery!!! was getting an annual service @ Dyno ecosse in hillington and the valve for the rear tyre came out while it was on the bench it had corroded it came out like a plug.

It was still wet with petrol or white spirit, which ever i used, after it dried it looked good.

All the years I have had on bikes I have only ever kept the chain lubed with WD40. That includes my moto x bikes as well. my son used to race them and every week I would just spray the whole chain with the stuff. My last fazer though did 20k and the chain was fine when I sold it. I guess I dont do the going to work in all weathers and only use it for fun, but it just seems a nice easy way to keep it wet and lubed. The WD40 doesnt flick all over the wheel and make a mess. I like my bikes to look clean and tidy. Wash it weekly and give it a spray. How long do you want a chain to last ? I would think that 20-25k would be a good lifetime for one

using gear oil is messy , but my OE chain lasted 36000 miles cos I used it !   

Its all about the dirt being flungoff, not held in a cutting paste which chain lube will do.TBH I aint used spray on lube for years ....

Me neither, chain lube in cans is a hangover from pre-o ring days. Ferkin rip off.

Same with visor anti-mist stuff. I've tried many types and none are much better than fairy washing up liquid (if you put it on properlly). Recently tho, I've been using a smear of shower gel, ( half full bottles of which I liberated from a hotel cleaners trolley whilst on holiday) and it works brilliantly. Smear a little on with the finger, leave for 3 mins then buff with a paper kitchen towel.
