a-thrashin and a-clatterin!

coming home last night and as i come into a roundabout i can hear a loud clattering noise. at first i thought my chain had stretched and was thrashing about but it was ok. could it be the clutch?

What age / mileage?
Can you tell roughly where the noise is coming from?
Is there a pattern (cold / hot / changing gear etc / particular speeds)?

had the same prob with my thou....turned out to be chain,take another closer look to make sure

Yeah, i'd be inclined to have a little look under the front sprocket cover for any nastiness too......

ok, started with the simple things first. the bike has been well looked after by previous owner. only done 22000 but i dont know how old the chain and sprox are. i took off the sprocket cover and all is well in there. i tightened the chain more than i should (hardly any play) and eventually the thrashing noise stopped. so i'm assuming its a chain problem to start with. where's the cheapest DID chain and sprox supplier? i'll change them and report back.

I've got Hein Gericke half a mile away from me, they've just gone into administration, another one bites the dust!!

I do like Hein Gericke - every time I go in there I always get discount. They always seem to go out of their way to help you and have received some good advice from the guys at my local one - its just a pity I don't really have the money to buy all the awesome things I'd like ^^

Just a thought ... it could be the chain-guard.

If the feeble Aluminium bracket that holds the front end of the cheap-and-nasty plastic chain-guard gets bent inwards for any reason then the chain slaps against the guard and it sounds horrid...

Mine did it one dark night after I hit a deer - sounded like a washing machine full of 2p pieces.

It gets worse (intermittently) on bumpy roads and would tend to go away when the chain is tightened.

just changed my chain and sprox with a new DID kit and what a revelation! it's a different bike around town. both sprockets were fine, so i'm assuming the chain had stretched.
