A recent post asked what was the longest you'd kept a bike for. It reminded me of a friend who'd bought a Honda RS250 new in 1981 and sold it last year... so, a nice round 30 years of ownership (it still started after a couple of kicks too). On the other hand, he'd only put 12,000 miles on it in all that time!
Perhaps a better guide to how well we get on with a particular bike would be how much we've used it... rather than how long we've been prepared to store it. So, what's the greatest mileage you've added to a bike?
Bought my Fazer in April, passed my test on 25th May and done about 5.5k so far. Anticipating 25k per year commuting.
cx500. bought with approx 19000 miles. retired (knackered drive shaft) at 82000. good bike.
Not kept detailed records but the bikes I did the most mileage on were a Honda CX 500 & an NTV 650. Neither particularly thrilling but reliable. These motors go on for very high mileage with oil& filter changed regularly. Least mileage was a Fazer 6(2004 model)-only kept for 6 months-found I preferred the FZS 600 & 1000! Once rode Birmingham to Cornwall on 50cc moped-so Im well qualified to be a member of this forum(ie not all there!) :lol
Blimey. :eek Two honourable mentions of CX500s already!
Honda seemed to have a knack for producing bikes that the press scorned, but were exactly what people wanted. Heavy, sluggish and unreliable (seem to recall they gave themselves a bad rep with the early ones having valve-train problems) according to every review I read of them, yet they were massively popular machines. Their 250cc Superdream was another from that era that sold in thousands and was derided by every bike mag.
Lawrence: that is a serious annual mileage!
21000 on that \/

The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people's money!
had a 2003 gen 1 thou for 7 years from new and put 107,000 miles on it. 100,000 was turned 40 miles short of Nordkapp.
what do I win?
I had this VFR for 10 years and did 35000 miles,15 years old now,a really really good bike ,comfy and reliable, would go on for another 10 years but got my gen 2 Fazer FZ1 as i was a bit bored :rolleyes

I know its only the internet but they are real people ! ain't they?
3000 fun loving miles since the end of April so far on my fazer
I don't keep bikes for two minutes :lol so the most mileage I've ever put on one (FJR1300) was 11,500.
QUENTIN TARANTINO - HALLOWED BE THY NAME!
24000 on a 1979 BMW R65. All the other bikes have been around the 6-8000 mark before I got itchy feet and sold them on. I have a European tour planned for 2014 so whatever bike I have then will add 3000+ miles in one go.
Bought a 1994 cb500 in 2005 for £1000 with 8000 miles on. It has now done 59000 miles.
In the seven and half years the bike has lived outside and been ridden through winter and with the exception of routine maintenance i haven't spent a penny on it or even had a advisory on an M.O.T.
It's mighty close to being as good a motorcycle as a fzs600 fazer.
Without doubt the best £1000 i ever spent on a motorcycle and it's still going strong and looking good.
