That said, it would be great sport for you to give it to cable tie and watch him bankrupt himself trying to restore it to his usual standard ... :lol

Had a look at the fuel filter :eek It should have a yellow paper element, but it was red. Hmmmm.... me thinks there will be rust in the tank. I'll give it a clean out and put in some fresh fuel. Noticed the carb rubbers were hanging off where they connect from the carbs to the air box That is going to be fun to try to get them back on! No wonder it won't rev out and the tickover takes ages to drop from 3000 rpm. My pile of poo will see the road again one day!!! Its a Kawa fx400r (Jap import) apparently its a naked gpx 400 :'( Fabulous. The offer of £90 is sounding more reasonable by the day :lol

Kawa forums are cr*p :rollin I was given 3 sets of carbs with the 'poo', It was running rubbish ie..... Won't tickover, revs  take forever to drop, won't rev beyond 6000 rpm, so i swapped them with a set of carbs that looked spotless. Fitted and filled with fuel - all the float bowls leaked :lol Stripped them and fixed the little flattened float bowl rubbers. Refitted fired it up and it does exactly the same thing as the other carbs   If it's not the carbs then anyone have any ideas? The downpipes don't heat up evenly - 3 get warm, but 1 isn't as warm, so it probably needs a new spark plug. This shouldn't stop it from revving out?Fellow foccers, i know you all want to save the 'pile of poo' from extinction :rollin

'Hanging' idle is a symptom of an air intake leak between carbs and cylinder. 

Clean outside is not indicative of clean inside, especially pilot jets and airways.  Most likely cause of rubbish tickover.

Plug, plug lead or plug cap for misfire but check for spark first.  If spark is good on that cylinder, suspect carb blockages again.

Remind me, how far are you from the Clyde ... ?

Insides of carbs are spotless. I have owned many heeps in my day and stripped and cleaned. Usually take to local bike shop and blow air through jets after cleaning. The only thing it may be is that the carb rubber clamps fully screw in and aren't exactly tight, so i might buy hose clips and see how that helps. carb rubbers have no cracks. I think it is going to be several small things that aren't 'quite right', so one thing at a time to eliminate any possible issues. I changed the carbs over the other day and the bike was exactly the same, so i think it is an issue outwith the carbs. ie ignition, carb rubbers, possible fault regarding it being dropped, which has engaged a fault code that restricts the bike :rolleyes  . Disconnected battery in case it was something to do with that. I heard of this happening on bros a cb 400.


The river clyde probably has several fx 400 r's at the bottom. Might buy scuba equipment to fish out what i need. The back tyre has more sidewall depth than width :lol  If i get it running well :'( I might have to sell it to some poor sod :o
