Gel seat anyone?
#1
I'm sure some of you have replaced the OE seat on your FZ1 to the gel replacement. I can see them on Ebay for approx £165 ish.....are they worth the money?

Will they stop my arse going numb after 100 miles? Hope so, as i'm planning a 2100 mile trip in June and suspect that I need to get a gel seat.

Thanks oh wise Foccers  Big Grin

Have you thought about the air cushon thing that I've read about on here? Cant remember it's name but someone will.

Airhawk are not cheap but it may be a case of getting what you pay for.
Lots of cheaper inlatable seat cushions if you want to try those first???

Not used airhawk myself but know a few ppl that have and like them because you can remove for normal ride and fit for touring.

Well the price of the Airhawk seems to be similar to gel seat at first glance. Doesn't look as good though as the gel seat, will look into it further though but also don't want to feel like i'm sat on a wobbly cushion of air, want a little support?

As for the pad, looks a bit crappy and the vanity in me can't have that thing strapped to the bike...people will think i've got piles of summat!  :lol

I wonder who was selling one, i'll look on the sales section now to see if I can find it!

I have a airhawk seat m8, and its worth every penny on long rides. Its far cheaper than most seat upgrades too.It maybe lifts you 1/2 " over yer stock seat height at max , as it works on a very thin air cushion layer. Too much air reduces the comfort tbh.
When I had my gen2 I got Tony Archer in Huddersfield to rework the seat completely, and back then it was about £70+. BUT it still was not as comfy as the airhawk.

I have done several 3000 mile tours with it  on my gen1 ( itself a reworked seat)i, up to 8 hrs a day in the saddle, and its the best I have found so far.
Personally I dont find gel that comfy either, my bum seems to prefer good foam to most typical gel seats.eg a stock 1050 sprint seat was far comfier than the gel equivalent...so do b aware gel may not be the best solution in any case.

OK Pitt, you've pushed me more towards it. I'll at least investigate them in a little more detail and see what's right.

Nice one :thumbup

I agree with  JP. A reworked seat with good quality foam is way more comfortable than gel. I had a gel insert on my gen1 and it was no better than stock.
I have done 3000 mile tours 4 times on a stock gen2 seat so it can be done but last year I had the seat redone by Tony Archer and it was a vast improvement. A 650 mile last day with very little discomfort is testament to that.

I bought an Airhawk just before going on a French tour.
The reason........popped a rivet a week before the trip. :\
As far as I'm concerned it was worth every penny, I couldn't believe how more comfy it made things, no problems at all.
It arrived the day before I left for France thank god!

Has anyone got a picture of an Airhawk seat as the pictures on the website make it look like some cheap ass rubbish you'd find on JML shopping channel or something!?!

Is it just an inflatable cushion with a seat cover or does it fully replace the existing seat???

Its  a multi chambered balloon basically ! , but with a quality waterproof fabric cover. Its shaped like an old fashioned bike seat, sits on top of your stock seat, and is easily removed when you get off it. It can be fixed on more permanently if you wish. Think of it more along the lines of a seat cushion. But it is very thin, like I said above. What I like about it is the fact you can take it from bike to bike, and not have to alter the stock seat.If I was to run a gen2 on tour it would be my first move ! But if the budget allows I would get tony archer to do the seat as well.Reason being you then get say 2 or 3 hour comfort for day to day riding , but have the airhawk for increased distance comfort.

On tour I actually get on the bike first then sit up and stick it underneath me, it never moves ( well what would with me stuck on top of it ! ) .On my first trip down to spain it was like riding on air, it really was comfy. I will c if I can find it out and post a piccie, but surprised google cant find a picture ? It also looks a bit like the old flat caps chaps used to wear 50 yrs ago !  :lol

cheers
