On my 98 FZS600 the inlet rubbers are showing hairline splits. It's not effecting the performance at all (no indication of running weak) so I think they do not go all the way through....yet!
New ones on Ebay are £75 a set :eek A friend suggested trying vulcanising rubber solution, the type you get in a push-bike puncture repair kit. Which I am tempted to try, only thing that worries me is the heat that close to the engine. What do you lot think?

If they are only showing hairline splits they are in pretty good condition and you have nothing to worry about. They are quite thick and don't often leak, even with what looks like fairly substantial splits in them.
As for the heat affecting the rubber solution I don't think it would be a problem as things don't get all that hot on the inlet side.
Mine have had big splits in them for over 4 years and all is well.

Thanks for the replies guys. The splits really are very thin, you could call them hair-line really. I am now re-assured and will ignore them until I can coerce the missus into buying me a set :lol

Theres an easy way to check if they are leaking, run the bike at idle and spray some wd40 or solvent over the rubbers, if they are leaking the engine will pick up or splutter, if engine stays smooth they are not leaking.
Splits are quite normal in the rubbers.

They all split fairly quickly, ignore until performance goes seriously off
yeah mine are the same, have been since i got it, did that WD40 trick and no problems so ive left them till i need to spend £75!
its just gone christmas so im brassik now!

I wonder if you can use heat resistant plumbing flu sealant filler ? I have some that is used for fitting ovens and it can resist long term 250 degrees

my inlet rubbers have been cracked for years and the bike has run fine,just lately ive had trouble pulling past 7000rpm so i bought the £75 rubbers on ebay ( user name mad for bikes ) i got them yesturday and am very pleased with the quality much the same as the origanals,not fitted yet but will let you know how i get on....

Having got a second hand set in good nick but not yet fitted. The outside seems to be thick rubber but the inside is a much harder rubber tube. It maybe or not that the outside shows signs of wear much before the inside thicker tube has any wear. Just my two pence worth having seen the inside of a set.
you 600 owners are lucky in that you can get pattern carb rubbers,you cannot get pattern rubbers for the thou,i had to pay £50 for a set of second hand ones,the thou ones are £43.25 each,the 600 ones are £60.66 each!! from yamaha
wow ...the 600 ones have shot up in price,i did enquire at yamaha a while back and they were £123....wonder if the demand has gone up :eek

I have the cracks like the rest of you. The wd40 check showed mine had no problem. However all my rubber hoses,parts,bungs etc get a regular dousing in AutoGlym "Vinyl/Rubber Care". It makes your old rubbers look amazing for a couple of months and rehydrates the oils in the rubber making them less likely to crack more!
my red fazer now has a misfire,anything below 4000 and again at 7000 rpm,makes it interesting to ride :eek ,all being well the new ones should be fitted on sunday,i tryed the wd40 test with no smoke or uneven running so iam thinking i might have more than one problem...might put the carb vacuum guages on before i start and see what sort of reading i get they have not been balanced for years.... :\

Red98. Is the bike outside/gets rained on? I'd check plugs first on a misfire as I've found they can break down if the bikes left outside and rained on, inside right plug, opposite sidestand, gets a lot of water standing around the plug which can't help, watch taking it out tho' mine broke in half with no effort as was corroded already, was cause of misfire tho'.......
If plugs ok, then try this: When it does it try putting the choke on a bit, if it gets better the bike's too weak a mixture, if it gets worse is too rich. 2 Stroke riding never leaves you  [size=78%] [/size]
virtual bodysnatcher...thanks for the advise,bikes always garaged and never used in winter,serviced at the end of last year and given a good going over with no problems.
i had time to replace the inlet rubbers today with the ones i got from mad4bikes,side by side its a job to tell them apart and they fit realy well...approx 5hrs from start to finish including a good clean as i went,first time for me so not too bad
not had time for a test ride yet ill do that in the morning
i think i found the stutted problem when i lifted the tank off,both the breather pipes were badly kinked and not able to do there job,i straightened them out and re-routed them,fingers crossed for the test ride tommrow......
the old rubbers although badly cracked on the outside were damage free on the inside,they are quite thick.....will update after the test ride tommrow

great morning for the test ride,iam only 20miles or so from ace cafe so thats where i went.....the stutter below 4000 has now gone but i still have the stutter at 7/8000 rpm it does pull through in top ,in the lower gears it is more noticable especailly when changing down to overtake, caught me out a couple of times this morning,didnt get chance to see what its like upto the red line as too busy this morning,iam happy with the rubbers and there excelent fit,they are made by TOUR MAX and supplied by..... www.mad4bikes.co.uk....price £75 ,first time i have used them,excelent service and will use again....i`ll start a new topic on the stutter and see if any of you foc-ers have had the same problem
