If you're feeling magnamamous (sp?),  would you mind scanning in the article and posting it,  as I can't afford luxuries like MCN at the moment.  Struggling to get something off the dole office until I get back to work.

Go on,  it will be your good deed for the day  :photo :photo :kiss

cheers

Denise / FZ1 girl on the US site has clocked up just over 197000 miles on hers....should be the 1st FZS1000 to break 200k, hopefully....

Hi,

I am Paul Barber , the guy with the recent 128k Gen 1 article in MCN.

Thanks for your comments, sorry i was a bit slow posting this but only just realised there was a new Fazer site!!

Take it you have the article scanned and read now?

if peeps are interested i will keep you updated on the mileage front etc.

I am bloody struggling with replacement suspension linkages at the mo to get the bike through the M.O.T. !

Reassuring to see these bikes will do mega miles ......... depressing that anything over 25k and the value falls through the floor .... cant figure it out

The vast majority of bike owners don't do large mileages, they use only use them on sunny Sundays and spend more time polishing them and tarting them up than riding.
Those of us who regard the bike as their main transport and keep them for years know the things are at least as reliable as a car. Nonetheless, resale value suffers because there is always a greater supply of low mileage examples available... so nobody is going to choose to buy one with a hundred k on the clock unless it's very much cheaper.
The upside is, if you're the sort who's found a bike that suits you and don't feel the need for a change every couple of years you can keep riding it and depreciation becomes insignificant. Smile

I have nothing against a high-mileage bike. A well-looked after bike that's done 100K miles will be in better nick than a bike that's done 10K miles and has been abused. Yes, I know I'm stating the bleeding obvious.

My 125 was a 2004 that had only done 9K when I got it in February. And loads went wrong. I ended up spending as much as I paid for it (£2,200) just to keep it going! Tyres, brakes, you name it, it went. It had had unkind previous owners, I'm sure of it. I traded it for the Fazer 600 I now ride after a scare where I thought the main gasket had gone on one of the cylinders. And I'm convinced the gearbox was on its last legs to boot.

The advantage of high-mileage bikes is greater for people like me: undergrads at Uni with little to no money. By only spending money on it when I need to (yeah, right!!), I keep costs down. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to insure, and it gets me into Uni just as well as that bloke's 2-month old GSXR750. His is shinier though!

On a more cynical note, an older bike is especially good if you crash (if you're more than a bit stupid, as I am, you will). If the van that reversed into me, knocking me off a few days ago had hit the Gixxer... To say there would have been a lot of tears would be an understatement! And yes, bike and I are fine. Just a few more scratches to the already scruffy front fairing. Which I intend to repair completely and re-spray when I get home anyway.

my 02 reg fazer only has 71k miles, there are some issues with cosmetics but the engine is a peach,no rattles etc and no smoke,it could be clocked and I could get away with it,not that I would do that.i just wish the weather was better as I don't get out on it much now a days

Well to be honest Im used to classic bikes and have a couple of brits and older japs ......... never crossed my mind that 42k miles on my Fazer would be an issue if I wanted to sell it ......... ah well looks like well have to get on with each other now ....... not exactly a hardship to be stuck with a fazer methinks  Smile

well done paul...it gives hope for the rest of us. I look on my gen1 as something which owes me nothing, so why think of selling it??
I have paid £4500 for mine including all my numerous mods, so far have done 30k miles since buying 4 yrs ago, would only get £2500 to 3000 to sell if I am lucky , so might as well keep her .£2k loss  for 30 k miles isnt bad either...when you look at cost of new bikes etc etc.
I do have dreams of topping the 100k barrier , but probably fuel costs and time constraints mean that wont ever be achieved....but its tempting to try for it , and very reassurring the motor at least will do it OK.
Apart from the exup, almost everything else on the bike is easy / cheap serviceable/ replacement , so even wearing out of parts isnt that great a shake...and if we ever did find a reasonable header replacement to oust the exup, well thats all bases sorted IMO.

when I was looking to sell mine, I took it to a local (other brand) dealer the salesman, who knew about the mileage, asked his mechanic to guess mileage... 03 bike, sucks teeth, *thinks high*... "25k?" nope, 107,000. but they couldn't take it as the boss had a max 40k policy. bit pissed off I was.

however, the dealers' views on mileage has affected private sales cos I got buttons for it, and AFAIK it still going strong.

you have to look at it from a commercial point of view...a 10 yr old bike with over 40 k on the clock aint every ones cup of tea for a start , dont sit well alongside new bikes the dealer does want to sell...and such secondhand bikes will never make the mark up the sales space requires...to me its a reasonable business decision.

Its why bmw usually sell off their trade ins to the trade for example.
