Switch or motor?

I noticed shortly affter the winter if i was in realy heavy traffic and couldnt be arsed to filter (happens now and then ) i got the red temp light pop on, went off again as soon as i got moving or turned engine off.
Also noticed it 3 or 4 times now when on charity runs (only this year, was fine last year) that again in slow or staionary traffic the red warning lamp comes on.
So today i went out a rode slowly round town for 15 mins or so to try to make it happen, sure enough affter a while the red light came on, and cleared as soon as i crept the speed back up.
so tried again and got the red light on, this time i got off the bike and checked the fan.... No fan on !!!
now im 90% sure the fan should be on long before it gets hot enough for the warning light. so i must have a problem.


In my VERY limited electrical knowlage it would seem to me there would be a switch to turn the fan on once it gets to temp "A" and a 2nd or maybe the first is variable to set the light on when the temp hits "B"

so either the switch is faulty or the fan motor itself had died.
but how can i find out what one it is?

The fans should come on automatically when the temp reaches 100 degrees and go off again when it drops below 94 or 95.  There is a relay located under the seat which controls this.  Don't know where the temp sensor is though, sorry.  I have actually fitted a flick switch to turn the fans on manually as I feel that 100 degrees is too late to be bringing the fans on.  As i live in a hot country, I turn the fans on when I am in town by wiring direct from a switch to the relay an in effect making the contact.  You could test the relay by simply bridging between the terminals to see if the fans come on.  If they work then the problem may be with the sensor if not then the relay will be at fault.

The relay is small and black with a white/clear connector coming out of the main loom. It is located behind the battery and directly under the front seat release mechanism (not key on the side but where the seat clips into).  The white/clear connector has four wires - Red, Brown with Green stripe, Red with White stripe and Grey.  The Grey wire is much smaller and this is the one you want.  If you touch a wire between where the small grey wire is connected and the battery NEGATIVE terminal (ie earthing the connection) with the ignition on the fans should come on.  This is a volt-free contact so no chance of shock!  As I said above, if the fans run then the problem may well be with the temp sensor.
Also setting at what temp the fan comes on is not adjustable without adding more complicated electronics.

Hmm well just taken a quick look (wish my damn haynes manual would arrive )
i think i found the 4 wire relay you refered to but its not exactly where you said and its not the same wire colours lol.

Umm because it would be pointless as they are fine?
I pulled all fuse's before i started the thread and tested with a meter. (tested all of them as untill the haynes manual arrives i dont know which one if any would effect the fan)
Also checked conections on what looks like the temp sender and the connections on the fan, both clean and looked fine.

since posting i checked the conections on everything that unplugs under the seat and side panels... well may as well do them all untill i know what one i need lol

Sorry, I just realised that you have a Gen1 FZ and I have a Gen2 - doh!  I am afraid that I have no idea where the connections would be on your bike, probably best to wait for the manual unless somebody else can shine a bit of light on the subject.

Another possible option would be to go onto the website of a genuine Yamaha dealer as a lot of them will have a microfiche type program which has exploded views of every system on your bike ie fuel, electrical, suspension, braking etc so that you can get the part numbers for ordereing.  One of these views will show the fan relay and its location.  I would guess it may be labelled 'Cooling Fan Relay' possibly.  Just used one of these to order a new plastic instrument cover but it is a Spanish dealer so of no use to you.  I have however come across the same thing on British and American websites so it is just a case of looking.

to test the fan attatch a fused positive feed from a battery to the blue wire and earth the black wire (lift the tank to get to fan wires)..see if she spins
to test the relay take off left hand side panel and remove the relay (note what colour wire goes where) using your leads straight from the battery again put the fused positive to the Brown terminal and the negative to the Green/Black terminal at this point the relay should click and connect the other two terminals inside (brown and blue) use a continuaty tester to check this for 100%

the thermo unit (temp sensor) should make the temp warning led come on for a few seconds when you first turn the ignition on and the go off letting you know that alls well with the circuit.

If you have a fault with the thermo unit let me know and I'll post what my manual says about that (quite lengthy that bit!)

Thx a lot guys, Manual finaly arrived today (2 weeks to get here /sigh)
Ran the tests (pretty much as FZ-rich said) from the manual and its a faulty relay
will track one down this PM and replace.

Just as an aside, for part numbers and descriptions i offten use http://www.cmsnl.com/ they have a lot of bikes listed and offten can help looking at how something is put together. the part numbers have allways been right so far. although i havent actualy ordered from them i just take the part number to my stealer.

Hi ghostbiker, I see that your manual you have been waiting for has arrived but have you seen the page to which I have sent you a link to? If not I think you will find it very uesfull there is reference to the fan that you are having problems with plus a shed load of other stuff.
