I believe there should be zero tollerance for drink driving because then people can't say I've only had one, it'll be ok, bla bla bla, if you've had any then you shouldn't be using a potentially very lethal machine.

I would say the first time you get caught you should have an instant 5 year ban from driving and some community service with extended driving test if you want your license back.

If you get caught a second time then banned from driving for life, a hefty fine and a lot of hours community service. If you are then caught driving and or drink driving ever again then you should do serious time in prison.

I don't want people to go to prison because then I/we, as tax payers, have to pay for their bed and breakfast! I would much rather they had to do community service instead.

A lot of you may feel that I am too harsh in my stance but I am only 25 years old and have lost a close friend and have known at least 4 or 5 people, plus the many other people in Shetland who were killed directly because of drink driving. Unfortunately as an Island community drink is a big problem here, as it is in many smaller island communities, and I hope that someday the law will help to prevent the tragic and heart breaking loss which the mindless and stupid act of drink driving can cause.

I wish you all safe journeys in the future and as others have said, if you are going to drive then just don't drink and if you're going to be drinking then don't take your car, it's simple.

All the best,

Stay safe,

Chris

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

IMHO

I suspect that this guy would be a below average driver even when sober.
Most people are able to notice a reduction in driving ability after drinking, if however you are a bad driver anyway, then this is not
so obvious and convinces you that you are "safe" to drive.

Get him a job as a crash test dummy to educate his feeble mind.
I used to not give a foc, then I discovered Red Bull and now I don't give a flying foc !!!

Yes he should have gone to jail on his 3rd time drink driving even if he hadn't been involved in an accident. I hope his insurance try make him repay as he was drunk but I doubt it.

There's a lot said about drinking and driving, something like 1 in 7 accidents involve someone who has been drinking ""to excess" so what about the other 6 ? I don't drink if I'm on my bike, if I'm driving I might have one or two pints but any more and I'm walking, the last time I was pulled, at midnight, for "driving too close to the near side" that was after telling them I wasn't weaving about and doing 50 in a 60 limit isn't an offence, I blew 6 the limit is 35, I'd had 2 pints over about 2 hours, don't forgot that the number of pints a drink driver claims is the number squared........... eg.  2 = 4.  3 = 9 etc. the only way to reduce is to reduce the speed limit, that is 15mph in a built up area and 30mph on motorways and I bet the death rate would go from 3000 to 30 per year.

but that's not going to happen, no way.

Never been any different!

Now you ride your bike (sober) and get clocked at 150......and you're going down!
