Surely the issue is still the reflectors rather than the actual bulbs themselves?

Correct, but you still have to make sure the position/alignment of the LED element is as close the original incandescent tungsten halogen element as possible

LED's have come a long way since the last post, you can buy bike specific kits that work fine and like you say adjust the beam height / positiining after fitting.
