Only my opinion, but after using two R6 shocks for thousands of miles (using the slightlly oversized Faulkners springs), neither spring moved sideways by any noticeable amount. Of course, they have to be mounted centrally and have the appropriate amount of preload on the spring at all times.
There's been quite a few conversions floating around and to date I'm not aware of anyone mentioning this as being an issue. If however you still don't feel it safe enough then make a customised spacer (or two for both ends) to give you peace of mind.
